toddler travel bed toys r us image
Q. im looking for the toddler dora beds(preferably to one with the canopy but the one without will do). found some on amazon.com but too much hassle getting it to oz. found some on ebay that say pick up but i dont want to travel to brisbane to get it. there was one on ebay where they will post it but its from victoria and the postage costs more then the bed itself.
i live in the whitsundays so preferrably around this area.i would even travel to townsville.
i heard spotlight had them but when i rang they said they dont do beds
i rang toys r us and they only had princess ones :(

Answer
Well i'm in Sydney... but my spotlight sells character beds! I was going to get the Thomas one for my son...but they were like $300, and i'm so glad i didn't cause he is already growing out of thomas.

I would probably just keep looking on ebay, hoping one pops on, otherwise, our son and now our daughter just have wooden beds, but we make it fun by almost always using character quilt covers. They grow out of that kiddie stuff so quickly, it doesn't really make sense to spend a lot of money on a bed. The quilt covers can be up to $50 or $60 depending where you get it, BUT kmarts ones are only $19-$29 now!!!!! very cool! (you may even snag a bargain... i got my daughter a tinkerbell one the other day in kmart for $6)....

good luck

actually...check in your toys r us store... they sell a lot of character furniture too! Toys r us has everything!

To keep your purse shut- like clasps/magnets (preferably magnets) .. ??

Answer
I have some powerful small magnets taken from broken hard drives ;]

However, you might find it easier to look in your local cheap goods store and are most likely to find a suitable magnet on a toy; a notebook with clasp; a pencil case; a travel board game or a fridge magnet.

Alternatively you could find a set of Velcro tabs and glue or stitch them to your purse.

Moms-what do you carry in your car?

healthy toddler travel snacks on Healthy kids' party food - Recipes - Good Living - Entertainment - smh ...
healthy toddler travel snacks image

Singthing

Well, I am a fairly new mom. My son is now 18 months old. I am also single and without family. I am alright with that.... it's actually taught me to be quite self sufficient and my son is a very happy and much loved boy. However, it's hard not having my own parents around to guide me.

So, I was just curious to know what other moms carry in thier cars? I am looking for good recommendations on snack foods (that aren't too messy), toys and interactive items, cleaning supplies for mess ups, etc. Really, anything that you "more experienced moms" out there could share with me, would be great!!

He does alright in the car, but sometimes does get fussy. I've given him several types of snacks, but spend too much time having to clean up the mess afterwards.

Lastly, does anyone have a good recommendation of a travel DVD player that hooks to the back of the passenger seat (in front of his carseat) that doesn' t cost too much?

Thanks to all for your answers!

Answer
We have three girls (ages 7, 9, and 11) from day one we took them on all our long trips. I also have a husband who was working 96 hours a week, so I know how it is to be on your own a lot. Lots of blessings sent your way to give you energy!!

Always have a small first aid kit for boo boos. The ones you get for a dollar at walmart are great (bandaids, alcohol wipes, some gauze)

Always have some music for the kid(s) to listen too. We found the music was much more calming than other things (We also have a lot of motion sickness in the middle child - so watching a movie is right out.) You can find some great stuff that isn't obnoxious for you. My girls like jazz a lot and love celtic music.
(If you can get a copy of the Seal Maiden -- its a great story told with music and cool for the grown ups as much as the kids)

When they were in the 18 mos age they really liked the soft squashy books made for toddlers. I also made a small photo album of fav things/people with one of those dollar albums with the plastic pages and 4x6 pics.

A small toy phone was also a big hit -- The noise and lights were a bit much, but they loved them. I also would put a piece of heavy duct tape over the speaker holes to help cut down the volumn (A lot of toys are loud enough to damage small ears)

A sippy cup with a lock valve helps. It is also good to use only cold water while traveling -- It's easier to clean up and will sit easy on the tummy. Milk is just nasty in the car when it spills (Can we say "home made cheese?") and juice is super sticky and smelly too.

It will also help your little one get used to drinking water, which is heathier and less expensive than sodas or koolaid.

I found that dry cereal is a good snack -- just only give them a little bit in a small rubber made bowl -- They have the ones that hold a half cup. That way if it spills it isn't as much to clean. Dry pretzels also work. Both of these snacks are not only less messy, but also healthier than sugery stuff (assuming you are using healthy cereal).

Once He gets a little older - Crayons and paper will be great. So will pipe cleaners -- They love crafting with them. Just wait until you don't have to worry bout him eating them while you are driving. They also help teach eye/hand motor skills. (Don't tell him he's learning-let him think he's just coloring pretty pictures).

He may also still enjoy a good chewy teether ring. They cut teeth until about three, so sometimes at this age they still like to just chew on something, because their teeth ache.

A soft lovey goes a long way on trips. Either a small blanket or stuffed animal is very comforting. (Also makes a nice pillow for naps)

If you are going to be driving for more than a couple of hours, have the pharmacist figure out the right dose of tylenol for his weight and age. Then dose him right before you leave. Riding for a long time makes little people ache a lot (I do this for the big people too!)

When you get there after a long trip, be sure and give him a warm bath and a dose of tylenol when it is next due -- This will help with sore muscles from sitting still in the car seat for soooo long.

I hope these will help out. Best of wishes.

PS -- always have

baby wipes for cleaning him.

clorox wipes for cleaning up the seat

trash bags (trust me!)

spare change of clothes for your little person.

If you've ever changed a kid on the side of a mountain while tractor trailers are swooshing by at 90mph, and scooped throw up out of the car seat, you'll understand where I've been!!)

Flying with a toddler?

Miel

I'm flying with my 15 month old in a week. Looking for tips when flying/traveling with my toddler?

Answer
bring plenty to occupy him-books,cds,movies if possible-try to bring thigs that will distract him and not the other passengers.
reguest to have a row of seats to your self if at all possible.
put hot towels over his ears for take off and landing.
bring some healthy snacks for him to munch on.
maybe a favorite blankie or stuffy.
explain to him/her(sorry) exactly what is going on during the flight and show him all the neat things like how the seat belts work and how he can have his very own table.

We're going on a 3 hour flight tomorrow with our 2 year old, and I'm just wondering what are some good tips for making his first plane trip a success. What are your experiences?
We're going to be traveling with our 2 year old and would love to hear about your experiences. What tips do you have? It's his first trip and I'm hoping it will be positive. Thank you.

Answer
it's always a good idea to take a couple of his favourite books and toys.obviously keep it to a minimum and take only what he really likes :) try one of those leapfrog things, they keep kids entertained for like, ages :D or a cd/cassette player,if he's the kinda kid who is entertained by stories and songs.

Suggestions of activities for a toddler and a preschooler on a long trip?

myfirstbab

I'll be traveling with my 3 1/2 years old daughter and my 19 months son next week. The flight will take about 7 hours followed by a 14 hours transit time then another flight of about 2 hours. Any suggestions about any activities mainly during the transit time (The first flight is at night so my kids will for sure be sleeping during the whole flight)
Thanks a lot for your help.

Answer
I don't have to say what you already know, which is that this could be a difficult trip if you are unprepared.

My first piece of advice is to let the both kids have thier own seats and a car seat (make sure it is approved for use on an airplane, not all are). Even though your son is under two and qualifies as a "lap baby", this will be a very difficult task on this long a trip.

It would be useful to allow the kids some time to run around a bit before boarding, so try to arrive a little early. Don't worry if they are too hyper at this point; let them blow off their energy. See if the airport you are departing from has a children's play area, and let them run loose. Don't skip any naps, but maybe only allow a short ones to keep them ready to sleep during the flights. Skipped nap = cranky toddler; short nap = sleepy toddler... :)

Here are a few other things to consider... First is hydration! The air in the cabin comes in from a source on the engine (called "bleed air"). Being from the ambient air outside, it is remarkably dry. It is around ten to twenty percent relative humidity, if that much at all. The problem here is breathing. We lose water normally from sweat, urination, etc; but in an airplane we also lose a lot from just breathing. The moisture comes out when we exhale.

Any adult can easily become dehydrated if not taking in adequate water, but for a small child, this is an even greater concern. As long as your flights are, you should make sure they stay well hydrated. Avoid sugary drinks, of course; but water, sugar-free, etc. would be useful here.

You will likely have to purchase the water or juice inside the terminal as they do not allow sufficient quantity of liquid through security screening. Also, I do not trust the "tap" water on airplanes; drink only the bottled water...

A bottle or sippy cup, pacifier, teething ring, etc to suck on is also a must. During ascent and descent, the cabin pressure will change and as a result, it is easy to get an ear block. These can be very painful, but are relieved by negative pressure in the mouth and throat. If it is really bad, you can try to yawn with the kids looking at you, the yawn reflex is strong and it often results in equalizing the pressure (ever yawn after watching someone else yawn? or did you just yawn because you've read this?). You can also try gently massaging the forehead, neck, and around the ears if it doesn't clear.

I've flown so many sick kids, I'm pretty good at recognizing the "ear block" before it really becomes an issue; and it during the early onset that it is easiest to treat. Look for fidgetyness, reaching for the ear, changes in breathing patterns, etc. Even slight, subtle clues would be enough to try the "yawn reflex", or give her a sippy cup, bottle, etc. The combination of yawning and sucking give enough negative pressure to the ear canals to prevent a true ear block from developing.

If it does develop, it can last for days, so be vigilant here.

Also, some people fret about pacifiers or bottles at this age. If either uses one, don't hesitate. In this case, it is a blessing! Potty training is also not encouraged on long flights. While enroute it is usually possible, there are long periods where the "seat-belt" sign is on, or the line is long, and the child "has to go now".

Toys and distractions are also requirements. Nothing big or fancy, just something that might occupy them for twenty or thirty minutes at a time. You can recycle them throughout the flight.

Coloring books, toys that beep or vibrate, Be creative, but you don't have to go too crazy either. You can even go so far as setting a small budget for them and letting them pick something out at the airport shop; but remember not to give it to them until you're in the air.

Finally, see if you can get a bulkhead row seat. This will give them the opportunity to have a play area on the floor without being able to get away as easily. Just put a blanket down and some toys, and they will have thier own space.

I hope this helps! I'm a flight paramedic and have transported many children. I am also a frequent traveler, including many international destinations. I speak from both a professional medical provider and a frequent flyer. I've seen dozens upon dozens of parents travel with small children. Some preparation in advance will go a long way in making the flight a comfortable one.

Cheers!

does anyone have advice for flying with a very active toddler?

I am looking for some suggestions for holistic remedies and tips for making a 5 and half hour plane ride bearable with a toddler that doesn't sit still for 5 minutes. Someone suggested Benadryl for kids, but I'm not sure about that. I know there are some homeopathic options out there. Has anyone tried any that work well?

Answer
I fly fairly frequently with my 3 1/2 year old and heâs a handful under the best of circumstances. The good news is the white noise from the engines is apt to make him a little groggy. Bad news, of course, is groggy isnât asleep and even if it results in sleep, heâs not apt to sleep the whole time. Some tips I have learned in the trenches. If possible, schedule your flight for his natural sleep time. It will be easier for him to quiet if his internal clock is putting a little pressure on him. Stay away from Benadryl if you can, especially if your child has never taken it. It can jazz your child up even more. Worse, it can dry out his sinuses too much and you might wind up with a sinus infection on your hands once you arrive at your destination. I have had great success with a little all natural oil with real lavender (not just lavender scent.) I just rub it on his temples or put some on his blanket. Lavender is a proven sleep aid. I also have him drink a little chamomile tea sweetened with honey. This may be tough with the restrictions on liquids. I just take some tea and make let it steep while on the plane. These two things work wonders in calming my little spitfire. I also suggest you get a couple of new little things for him/her to play with on the plane. Don't let your child see them before you get on the plane and only give one at a time. It will be like little presents and that is always a fun diversion. Other than that, get plenty of rest yourself before you leave and try to be patient. Ignore any "looks" you get from other passengers, and don't be afraid to ask for help. If you have connections, by all means travel with a stroller and gate check it. It will be a life saver between gates and flights if only to keep your child contained. Good luck. If you get yourself in the right mindset, I think you'll have a lot of fun. My son and I love our ADVENTURES ON AIRPLANES.

how to carry the kids and luggage when changing the airplanes?

Deny

I am traveling internationally (18 hours trip, we change the plane twice) with my 2 kids. My older son is 2 years and 6 months and baby 5 months. I am thinking how I will carry the kids and luggage, in case I have to check the luggage when I change the plane.
Any info and advice will be helpful. Thank you.

Answer
Hello!
Wow what a flight! 18hours with with two toddlers :) You are a brave women!

If you are with the same airline your bags will automatically be transferred. If not, then I think if you can contact the airline ahead of time you can probably arrange to get a stroller at your destination OR get your stroller on the plane so you can take it off once you reach your destination. I am sure it will be fine though, like something can be arranged for sure.
I wish you the best of luck with your flight and arrangements with your children and baggage :)
Happy flying!

VERY active 16 month old baby on 9 hour flight?

well the end of may i am traveling with a 16 month old,its a friends baby and he is coming on a 9 hour flight with us....thing is he is very active and angry

he cannot sit on someones lap for longer then 2 minutes without screaming and kicking to get down

i will be bring new toys he hasn't seen before, and a dvd player

thing is,they toy,crayons,books....he will throw at people or on the ground after about 2 minutes...the dvd player he will try slapping and try to throw at people or on the ground,if we don't let him slap or throw it,he will pull an tantrum kick and hitting and screaming, yes we can walk up and down the aisle but he tends to let little kicks out and do it so it looks like an accident,as well as knocking things over,he doesn't care who owns it,so if its someone laptop on a tray he'll knock it off and laugh in there face

because he us under 2 he sits on a lap and so no car seat to sit him in,i would have also liked to have him in a car seat, but the lap option is cheaper

it wasn't my idea to bring the baby,it was my older sisters, she paid for him a stuff if i had my way,i know its bad and all but i wouldn't have brought him

so any ideas on what else i could do,to calm him
we are sitting in middle seats so no window seat and my sister wont change it so thats were we will stay

food, snacks, bottle and soothers will be brought

even they gets thrown at people and on the ground
i am flying during the day,i mind the kids on a daily basis for 5 hours, and my rules never work,he just doesnt listen, time outs are used, never work tho
the flight is paid for an all,and she bought no seat for him,she wouldnt really let me or her sit in another seat with him...she would prefere he seat with the 3 of us meaning me,her and her husand

Answer
I don't have to say what you already know, which is that this is going to be a difficult flight. My very first recommendation would have to be that you get control of the situation early. Perhaps a week early! What I am recommending you do is take the child in with enough time to get him to acclimate to you, and for you to set and enforce some ground rules with him. While I am not a big fan of being harsh with children, you may have to act the part of a strict disciplinarian so that by the time you are on the plane, he will know to follow your rules and guidance. My other tips are more general, for anytime flying with a baby or toddler; but in this particular case, getting control of things early on will help you to keep control on the plane.

My second piece of advice is to get him his own seat and a car seat (make sure it is approved for use on an airplane, not all are). Even though he is under two, he is a rambunctious tot with an attitude. It will do well to have a place for him to call his own, for all involved.

You didn't mention what time of day the flight is, but trying to time it so he will sleep is a good one. It would be useful to allow him some to run around a bit before boarding, so try to arrive a little early. Don't worry if he is too hyper at this point; let him blow off his steam. See if the airport you are departing from has a children's play area, and let him run loose. Don't skip any naps, but maybe only allow a short one before the flight.

We lose water normally from sweat, urination, etc; but in an airplane we also loose a lot from just breathing. The moisture comes when we exhale.

Any adult can easily become dehydrated if not taking in adequate water, but for a small child, this is an even greater concern. At nine hours, you should make sure he stays well hydrated.

During ascent and descent, the cabin pressure will change and as a result, he may get an ear block. These can be very painful, but are relieved by negative pressure in the mouth and throat. If it is really bad, you can try to yawn with him looking at you, the yawn reflex is strong and it often results in equalizing the pressure (ever yawn after watching someone else yawn? or did you just yawn because you've read this?). You can also try gently massaging his forehead, neck, and around his ears if it doesn't clear.

I've flown so many sick kids, I'm pretty good at recognizing the "ear block" before it really becomes an issue; and it during the early onset that it is easiest to treat. Look for him becoming fidgety, reaching for his ear, changes in breathing patterns, etc. Even slight, subtle clues would be enough to try the "yawn reflex", or give him a sippy cup, bottle, etc. The combination of yawning and sucking give enough negative pressure to the ear canals to prevent a true ear block from developing.

If it does develop, it can last for days, so be vigilant here.

Also, some people fret about pacifiers or bottles at this age. If he uses one, don't hesitate. In this case, it is a blessing!

Toys and distractions are also requirements. Nothing big or fancy, just something that might occupy him for twenty or thirty minutes at a time. You can recycle them throughout the flight.

Coloring books, toys that beep or vibrate, Be creative, but you don't have to go too crazy either. You can even go so far as setting a small budget for him and letting him pick something out at the airport shop; but remember not to give it to him until you're in the airplane.

Finally, see if you can get a bulkhead row seat. This will give you the opportunity to let him play on the floor area without being able to get away. Just put a blanket down and some toys, and he will have his own space.

I hope this helps! I'm a flight paramedic and have transported many children. I am also a frequent traveler, including many international destinations. I speak from both a professional medical provider and a frequent flyer. I've seen dozens upon dozens of parents travel with small children. Although he is a bit spoiled, and this makes it more difficult, with some preparation you can make this a good experience too.

Cheers!

We have flown this before with both of our kids, but one was just a 3 month old so he slept the whole time. Now he is 1yr 4months and has a lot more energy. I need some ideas of toys or games I can make with simple craft supplies, as we don't have much along the lines of travel toys here in the Philippines. If anyone knows of a website that has simple to make ideas, please leave a link, thanks

Any advices for traveling on an international flight with a baby and a preschooler?

Mod W

I am wondering if anyone could give me an advice for traveling on an international flight with a baby and a preschooler? I am planning a trip to visit my family in Thailand at the beginning of next year. My children will be 3 years old, and 4 months old. It is scaring to think about being alone with 2 little ones on a 20 hours flight from US to Thailand. Please let me know. I need an advance suggestions to prepare. Which airline is the best for traveling with the children?

Answer
bring some toys (noiseless ones would be very much appreciated by fellow flyers). Try to time your babies feeding so that it is happening during take off. Helps stop ears from popping and therefore no crying.

Bring books to read for them, snacks are good too. you may want to bring a comfy pillow for your toddler as the ones on the plane aren't comfy.

20 hour is an insanely long flight for them. wow! good luck. But just try to bring as many comforts of home and as many things to keep them amused as possible.

Good luck!

How many days would I need to go to all of the Disney World Parks including the water parks plus Universal Stu?

travel toys canada image

April

I am planning a trip to Florida. I would like to go to Disney World all of the parks plus Disney Water Parks plus Universal Studios including Harry Potter World. I am thinking 10 days for Disney and 4 for Universal but would love to hear from other people that are familiar with these parks. I will be traveling with my mother, husband and two 18 year old children so we will be skipping the small, kiddie style rides.

Answer
Your estimate for Disney is probably good, but you could do it in less if you really tried to. I have taken a one day trip to Disney World before and was able to get on almost all the big name rides at all the parks except Animal Kingdom in that one day, but after that I was completely burnt out. Also that was during the off season so the parks were not crowded either. Overall I think 10 days is fair, but you could probably do it all in 8 if you really wanted to. My main advice is to get the park hopper because after lunch time at Magic Kingdom, it will be packed until about an hour before park closes. If you go to a different park for the afternoon hours you will be much better off. Epcot is a great park for adults and older kids. World Showcase doesn't have much as far as rides, but you could easily spend two days experiencing everything it has to offer. Disney is extremely well themed, so there is a lot to see in all the details of all the parks as well. Must dos for each park are:

Animal Kingdom: Expedition Everest, Kali River Rapids, DINOSAUR, Kilamanjaro Safari, Finding Nemo: The musical

Hollywood Studios: Tower of Terror, Rockin' Roller Coaster, Lights Motors Action Stunt Show, Star Tours, Toy Story Mania

Epcot: Test Track, Mission:Space, Soarin', Spaceship Earth, Universe of Energy(its long but very entertaining), Maelstrom, Gran Fiesta Tour, O' Canada

Magic Kingdom: Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Thunder Mountain, Space Ranger Spin, Journey of the Little Mermaid( slow moving, but an incredible ride), Haunted Mansion.

Typhoon Lagoon: If you are a good swimmer try body surfing in the wave pool. There is a board near the entrance of the wave pool that lists the times there are surf waves.(Bring goggles for this)

Blizzard Beach: Be sure to hit up Summit Plummit first thing in the morning as it gets quite crowded later in the day.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your Universal estimate is probably a bit high. When I've gone, I've gotten both parks done in one day. Universal is much smaller than Disney. One other thing worth mentioning about Universal is that a significant number of Universal's rides are motion simulators, so if those aren't your thing, one day is plenty of time there. My advice here is to definitely check out the Harry Potter part of Islands of Adventure as its theme-ing is on par with Disney's. Must dos:

Universal Studios Park: ET, The Mummy, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, Men in Black

Islands of Adventure: Wizarding World, Incredible Hulk, Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls

When traveling to canada what all can you take with you?

I am traveling to Canada in September to see daughter and grandaugher and would like to take gifts for them since i wont be there for their birthdays and Christmas, would i be aloud to take toys and clothes to them from here or would it be best to buy them once i get there.

Answer
Yes, you can bring gifts into Canada. As the second poster states the limit before paying duty is $60.00 Canadian per gift. Anything over that value is subject to duties and taxes. Tobbacco, alchohol and advertizing matter cannot be claimed as gifts. This website will answer several questions you may have.http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/E/pub/cp/rc4161/rc4161-e.html#P190_11643

Please note that there are some restrictions on food, pets and plants brought into Canada as well. All food, tobbacco and alcohol should be transported in containers which can be sealed at the border. For information on what food stuffs can be brought into the country and the amounts of food allowed please refer to this website. http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/corpaffr/publications/canada/canadae.shtml

As for your enquiry about the feasibility of purchasing gifts in Canada, the taxes vary from province to province so that will affect the costs of goods depending on which province you shop in. If you are planning to purchase gifts with a value over $60 each you are going to have to pay duties and taxes at the border anyways. Canada offers some excellent lower priced stores to shop at as well as the higher end ones. You can also claim a rebate for taxes you paid in Canada on purchases, accomodations, etc. I would say the deciding factor would be whether you have the space to bring extras with you or would just find it more convienient to purchase the items in Canada.

There are also restrictions on what you can take back to the USA. I posted this site so that it might help you in any purchases you may make in Canada to take back with you as souveniers, etc.. http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/kbyg/prohibited_restricted.xml

I hope this information is of help to you and I hope you enjoy your visit to Canada.
Please excuse spelling errors...spell check not working.

What is the best car seat stroller combo that grows with baby?

toddler travel stroller on ... Cosi Perle Mico Car Seat Lily Pink Travel System Baby Strollers
toddler travel stroller image
Q. I'm expecting and looking into purchasing a car seat stroller combo but would like the set to grow with the child so I'm not buying new ones every couple months any ideas??? Thanks.

Answer
Congratulations! There is going to be a lot of info here. I hope it doesn't make you feel overwhelmed!

There are two types of car seats that you can get for a newborn baby. One type is an infant only seat that comes with a base and a carrier. The base is installed in the car and the carrier can be clicked in and out of the base. This makes it transportable. The carrier can also be installed without the base and can be clicked into a stroller.

Most infants outgrow their infant car seats by as little as 6 months to as much as 18 months (for the tiniest and really petite children). Some infant car seats go up to 30 and 35 lbs; however, babies will outgrow these seats usually by height, not weight- when the child's head is less than 1 inch from the top of the seat, the seat has been outgrown. Here is how to measure that 1 inch: http://www.car-seat.org/showpost.php?p=278124&postcount=1
Most infant car seats have very similar shell heights. For example, the Graco Snugride Click Connect 40 infant car seat goes up to 40 lbs, but has the same shell height (height limit) as the Snugride 22, 30, 32, and 35 model. The Graco Snugride Click Connect 40 has different features that differ from other models. I just don't want you to be misled by reading the weight limit and thinking that it will last longer.

Another type of a car seat that can be used for a newborn is a convertible car seat. These are big seats that stay installed in the car at all times, which means that they are not transportable (unless if you uninstall them). A convertible car seat can be used for a newborn provided that the harness straps can be adjusted at or slightly below the baby's shoulders. This means that the bottom most harness slots need to be low enough to fit a newborn's torso. Slots less than 7 or 8 inches will fit most full-term newborns.

A convertible car seat can be used both rear and forward facing with the harness. (The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says to use the rear facing part of the seat until the child outgrows it in that position as rear facing is the safest way for babies and toddlers to travel). But when the forward facing function of the seat is used, the harness straps need to be coming from at or slightly above the child's shoulders. Slots higher than 17 inches will mean that it will last a child a long time. Selecting a convertible car seat with low bottom slots and tall top slots will mean that a convertible can be a child's last harnessed car seat, from birth to about age 5 or 6,

After riding in a car seat with a harness, a child then rides in a booster seat. Boosters are inexpensive, and some high-back models are under $100. So, what I am saying is that after the convertible car seat stage, you won't be spending a lot of money on car seats at all.

And I wouldn't buy a "3 in 1" car seat in hopes of saving money. These "3 in 1" car seats can be used both rear and forward facing with a harness and as a booster. Most of them are gimmicks that lure consumers to buy them as they advertise that they will be a child's "last seat". For example, here are some flaws on "3 in 1" seats.

The Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite is a tricky car seat to install and makes a terrible, terrible booster as it positions the lap part of the belt on the child's tummy. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) put it on the "not recommended" list: http://www.iihs.org/research/topics/boosters/not_recommended.aspx

The Evenflo Symphony 65 e3 makes a great rear and forward facing car seat with a harness. It only gives about 1 inch of growing room in booster mode after outgrowing the harness system.

The Diono Radian models make great rear and forward facing car seats with the harness, but booster mode will be outgrown at the same time harness mode is outgrown as it gives absolutely zero height room to grow in booster mode (the tips of the child's ears need to be below the top of the seat and there is no way to adjust the seat higher).

What is the difference between all the different baby strollers and car seats?

Gimme

I know a lot of people are using the convertible units (even though I don't really know what they are)? I know I can purchase the stroller and car seat apart - but can I purchase them together - do they detatch and hook into one another? Are they worth buying? I am confused about all the different options. Please help.

Answer
Yes, they hook into each other such as this:

http://cn1.kaboodle.com/hi/img/2/0/0/9f/d/AAAAAra-PF0AAAAAAJ_exA.jpg

There are infant carseat (like the one pictured) and convertible carseats like this one:

http://www.gracoinfantcarseatreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/Britax-Decathlon-Convertible-Car-Seat.jpg

Convertible carseats are more upright and are bigger. Whereas infant carseats are smaller and made more for newborns/infants who don't yet have neck or back support. Convertible carseats can be used for infants, but normally are used for toddlers about 1+ years.

Travel systems (the stroller and carseat together) are very handy. They offer more support for an infant and allow the baby to face you. Not to mention, they are normally cheaper than buying both items separate.

How much should I expect to spend at Disneyland?

I am taking my son to Disneyland this summer. I've already figured costs for travel, the hotel stay and tickets, but am wondering if anyone who has been somewhat recently knows how much I should expect to spend in the park? My son is only 3 years old and this is the first trip for both of us. I'd like to buy a souvenir or two and we will be eating lunch and dinner at Disneyland. There will be a bunch of people in our group, but I will only be spending money on myself and my son. Any idea how much I should plan for or any money saving tips?

Answer
I'll start with the Food, there are several places in Disneyland that are a great price for Lunch and Dinner and because the meals are so big at some of these places I would share with your 3 year old, I go to Disneyland quite often and I share all my meals with my boyfriend and we both end up really full. If you really don't feel like sharing and want to get kids meals for him allot of the restaurants and counter services have a Kid's Meal and a Toddler meal depending on how much you son eats the Toddler meal is about $3.50 and the Kid's at $6.50 and they both include a drink. Honestly once you see the size of the meals at Disneyland I'm sure you will end up deciding on sharing.
My Favorite places for Lunch and Dinner are Rancho del Zocalo it is mexican food and is great portions if you were to get a meal and a drink and share with your son, because they also have refills you would spend about $10-15 for everything.
Cafe Orleans is great for lunch because even though some of there meals are about $15.00 a piece I go there and get a couple of starters for lunch like Gumbo & Pommes Frites and get a lunch for $10.00. It's an idea you can use at allot of places get a couple of starters and it is sure to fill you and your son up for lunch.
A great spot for Dinner is PCH Grill it is at Paradise Pier and is about a 10 minute walk but they have great food and great prices. Here is a great site that I've always use it has the menu's for all of the Disneyland Resort and prices this way you can look at it and decide what you think is best.

http://allears.net/dlr/din/menu/menus.htm

A money saving tip is to bring along a water bottle for you and your son so one you stay hydrated and also so you don't have to pay for drinks the whole time. If your son doesn't like to drink just water you can get a box of a flavored drink and mix it into the water.
Another thing would to bring a snack that he like's that way if you are standing in a line or take a break you can pull out a snack.
If you are a Coffee drinker you can get a reg. coffee at Blue Ribbon Bakery and if you save your receipt you can get a free refill al day that is sure to save you money.

As far as souvenirs there is and such there are a couple things you can do one is if you what an autograph book you can make one for allot cheaper then they sell them, go to Target or Walmart and get a notebook then decorate it in the characters your son like's he'll have something more personal then the books that they sell.
If you want to get a shirt there it is about $15.00-35.00 depending on the shirt your are looking for, Toys can be anything from $5.00-50.00 depending on the toy of chose, if you have your heart set on getting something from Disneyland I would plan at least $50.00 for each of .
There is a Character Warehouse about 10-15 minutes away and they have allot of stuff that Disneyland sent to them and there shirts and toys are allot cheaper you could get something for your son there and then surprise him with it mid way through and that way he still has something special to celebrate the time at Disneyland.
Also a couple of free things he may like if you are celebrating something Special make sure to go by City Hall in Disneyland and get your free button, also you can ride the Fire engine down Main Street and after they will give your son a Jr. Firefighter Sticker with Mickey on it, I am sure he would love what little boy doesn't want to be a Firefighter.

Well I hope this helped you and enjoy your trip! *Jena

Moms who have taken toddlers on cruises please help?

J&M

We booked a carnival cruise today for next month. We are leaving a day early so we won't be rushed traveling all day any worrying about having to get on the ship right away. Our son will be 18 months this is our first family vacation, first time flying with a toddler.
Any tips? What to bring? Need all the advice we can get for a smooth vacation!

Answer
People have NO idea what they are talking about, lol. Most cruises have daycares for children. You need to call and find out the information and set anything up beforehand if necessary. You also need to call and make arrangements for a playpen for her to sleep in. The ones I have been on (multiple with my two children by the way who are 3 and 4 years old now) the cruise ships say the children have to be potty trained to be in the playcenters but some will take a non-potty trained child for a fee ($50 a day) Every ship has their own polocies so it is vital to call now! Make sure you bring sunblock, a lifevest for swimming, a lovey from home and a camera. You dont really need toys because every ship has areas designed for young children and she will be amused by the pool or in the playcenters with other children/staff. Have fun because this will be an experience to remember!!

FYI: What is the difference then on a cruise ship or a crowded grocery store? You will be holding her anyways so she will be fine, lol My kids are still alive and kicking!

We are planning a trip in Aug with a 6 month old...i need all the info I can possibly get!

Answer
If a child is under 2 and does not have his or her own seat, then you do not have to pay extra. that means that the child will have to sit on your lap the entire trip, so if it is a long trip, it could be uncomfortable.

If you want the child to have his or her own seat the airline will usually offer a discounted rate for the seat. The discount is usually between 15 and 50%. Since flights have been booked at over 90% for summer, this discount may not be available during summer.

Finally, if you are taking a long flight on a twin aisle plane, you can request a basinet. This is for children under 25 lbs. and needs to be requested when you reserve your tickets. The only seats that have this option are just behind the bulkheads that seperate different sections of the plane. The basinet is free and it is big enough to allow the child to move around and have some toys in there. My wife and I had a14 hour flight with our daughter and the basinet was great. She was bale to sleep and we did not have to hold her the entire time nor did we have to pay for a third ticket.

I am getting a new kitten. What are all of the things I need to know?

Kit

Here are all of the details:

He's from a shelter where I live
He is a he
He will be anywhere from 1 day old to 10 weeks old

Tell me all the things that I need to know. What to buy, how to care for him.
I know how to care for a cat. I just need to know if I'm forgetting something.

Answer
Just cover the basics.
a list of things you need:
food bowels
cat scratch pole
toys (mouse, ball etc)
Kitty litter tray
Kitty litter crystals
poop scooper
collar (If you wish)
pet condo/ bed

things you will need if your going to pick up your kitten:
travel cage/ a sterdy box or something similar
paper towel (for accidents)
treats

things that you may like to know:
your kitten may be very attached to you when you first bring him home because its a new place, one he has never been to before so it will take a few days for him to adjust to the change. He may find it VERY comforting if you give him extra love in this time and feel safe around you.

Kittens DO teeth like humans, they will loose their teeth and grow new ones. this first occurs from around 10- 15 weeks old and may re- occur anytime after that until they have lost and teethed all their teeth. During this time, they can be in pain and may show extra affection and dribble A lot. (my cats dribble all the time which a sign of affection as is totally normal but it gets very bad around teething)

Male cats if not desexed start "spraying" at 6-12 months old (spraying is basically them spraying their wee over everything they consider "theirs") it tends to smell a lot so I advise that you get your cat de sexed (if not already) at around 4-6 months old if not earlier :)

Thats about all I can think of for now but if you have any other questions just send me a msg :)
good luck !! â¥

What would you do if your teenager did this?

toddler travel gifts image

Sandra

Imagine you have a 13-yr old teenage daughter. You see her once a year. You call her on a regular basis, but she doesn't seem to be interested in your conversation. She never calls you on your birthday, on Father's Day or any other holiday. She has a stepfather who she considers like a father. (He's known her since she was 2). When she does come and visit, she doesn't appear to be interested in your conversations. She will turn her head when you talk to her. She admits to you that she doesn't care much for you or your family. You buy her music cd's, books ($80 worth of gifts.)Then, you get a text from her out of the blue, asking a $200 game gadget of some sort and when she gets the gift, you finally hear "I Love you dad!" Your wife tells you that your daughter is using you and loves you when you buy her gifts. You tell your wife she's jealous and wife gets upset because she is trying to open your eyes and she meant no harm. Your wife reminds you how she suggested to get your toddler an indoor playground and you made suggestions to take the toddler to the park or to McDonald's. then your wife gets upset and tells you that some kids are favored more than others. You don't get to see your two sons (toddler & infant) because you travel for business.

What do you think of the situation?
I mean, if you were the father of this teenager, what would you do?
Do you think the wife over reacted?

Answer
The daughter sounds very ungrateful, but who wouldn't take gifts? It's not her fault she was raised with another man, or that she only sees her biological father once a year. The father sounds like he's trying to buy his daughter's love, but it's obviously not working if she only "loves" him when it's convenient. The father loves his daughter, and sounds like he'd do anything for her. I'd stop buying her gifts, and become more involved in her life not only phone calls. The wife didn't overreact. she's just trying to look out for him because she loves him. of course she's going to get upset if the father doesn't seem as interested in her children like he is with his daughter who she feels couldn't care less about him. I hope that helps Good Luck Xoxo

The Best Gifts:

Diapers!!

Baby Care Items: Tear-Free Shampoo, Baby Bath, Washcloths, Wipes, Diaper Cream....

Swing: Battery Operated

Vibrating Bouncy Chair

Lullabye CD (You can find some great contemporary ones....I danced with my girls to soothe them when they were babies at bedtime and we still do this every night at bedtime and they are 3 and 4!). The gift of music is a GREAT gift!

Hooded Towels: These are great for keeping baby warm after bathime and you can keep the hood on them while you get them dressed.

Onesies and Socks: You can never have too many because the onesies will get stained and the socks have a mysterious way of going missing!

Receiving Blankets: You can use them to swaddle, as portable diaper changing stations, as burp cloths, to clean up a mess....VERY VERSATILE!

Diaper Bag: A great diaper bag is a must!

Personalized Items: Not only are these simply very nice things to have....a personalized blanket, diaper bag, tote or cap will never accidentally go home with another child at daycare, moms group or the family function. A big blanket with baby's name will grow with them through toddler-hood, too!

Travel system is nice.....but I think only the one registered for or that mommy and daddy wants is the way to go on this high-ticket item! (Travel system is the car seat and stroller combo!)

Nursery set/Bedding set....once again this is a very nice item to get at the shower if the giver goes with the one the parents chose! The nursery set sets the tone for the ENTIRE nursery and mom and dad should be the ones to pick this one out!

Snugli or Baby Wrap: There is nothing better than being able to grocery shop or go for a walk at the mall with your hands free! Baby simply loves being close to mom and these carriers are the perfect way to lull baby to sleep and still be able to get all your things done!
______________

Gifts that were......not needed

Diaper Genie: Poop smells like poop. Poop in a cool plastic container with scented liners smells like.....Scented Poop? Skip the genie and just take those diapers to the tough kitchen trashcan and throw your trash out a couple of times a day!

Boppy: I never could get the hang of the boppy. It looked cool but I found a big king sized pillow to be much easier and better to manipulate for the PERFECT position when bottle feeding AND breast feeding.

Fancy Outfits: Too many of these will have you wasting days spot treating all those blowout/spitup/food stains. One or two is fine but too many of these and they'll never get worn!!

Diaper Stacker: The new mom has enough to do without having to make the unused diapers look pretty in the stacker.

Heartbeat Sound Gizmos: I tried doing this with my fussy 2nd daughter....it never worked. They want to be close to mommy and the heartbeat sound thing is convincing but, in our case, a no go. Save your dollars!

Pastel Mobiles: Research says babies are much more interested in BRIGHT COLORS....so pastel mobiles with just plush animals hanging down aren't going to be very interesting to the little one!

Mattress Covers: Baby had a leak at 2am.....that mattress cover is going to have to come off as well as the sheet. After getting the NEW one on and then trying to wrestle on the sheet on top of that....mom and dad are going to figure out that the crib mattress is VINYL and that the mattress cover, really, isn't neccesary. Baby is going to be perfectly happy on just the sheet! Just make sure to wipe down the mattress with a baby-friendly cleanser everytime sheets are changed!

How can you legally travel on a 50cc scooter with a toddler?

toddler travel locations on The Australian Deserts - Facts, Information, Outback Travel Advice
toddler travel locations image

jeff_rulz_

It is legal in Missouri to drive without a license or helmet on a 50cc scooter and I would like to purchase one to cruise around town. However, I am concerned about how much I would use it. I would use it more frequently if I could legally carry my 3 year old with me. Just curious if it's legal and what I should get to protect him (other than a bicycle helmet).

Thanks!

Answer
A bicycle helmet will do NO good.
3 years simply isn't big enough.

I'm all for kids riding, my son sat behind me at 6. There are minimum requirements, even if not written into law (they are law elsewhere): Dedicated seat for passenger, dedicated footrest for passenger (which they must be able to use), handhold(s) for passenger. Helmet - and a styrofoam cooler is for beer, not pavement.
The passenger must be large enough (and understand enough) to be able to hold on. The helmet must fit properly - good luck finding a hat for the little melon.

I added an extra set of pegs for Jr. The law said he must reach, did not specify must be in original location.

How do I get my toddler over jet-lag?

Anela Ange

We flew from the UK to the USA for two weeks and just got back 3 days ago. Now my 1 year old is awake all night and sleeping all through the day. How can I adjust her sleep schedule, and mine?!

Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant and I fly with my children about twice a year between Europe and California, which is a 9 hour time difference.

Obviously, I had the jet-lag game down cold since I worked almost all international, long-haul flights, but it became a little more complicated when I flew with my children. As babies, I noticed they switched nights and naps. End of story. Easy. Once they hit toddler hood, it was a whole different deal. I had pleas of "Barney! Barney!" at 4am. Yikes!

First, remember that her stomach needs to adjust just like her sleep schedule. Be sure she's not headed to bed on an empty stomach, only to wake at 3am with hunger pangs expecting dinner. Get yourselves on the local eating schedule asap.

Adjust to your new time zone but be reasonable. My guidelines are bed between 8pm-midnight and up between 5am and 10am. Set your alarm if you have to. Once you are on something vaguely reassembling a normal wake/sleep pattern in your new location, you can then "tweak" forward or backwards to make it more sane. This will get rid of that "zombie" feeling and at least have you feeling normal when you're awake. Don't try to dive into exactly the same schedule you have at home or you may be paving the way to disaster.

Light is an important componant to melatonin. Look it up and read up on this important chemical your brain produces which aids sleep. Light supresses it while dark increases it. I used to take melatonin in pill form when I worked but I was hesitant to give it to my children. Don't give it to your daughter unless you discuss it with a medical professional first.

During the day, head outside and get in fresh air and sunlight. On a bad day, we would head to the mall. Being with other people, especially other children works well to keep awake in the day time.

I assume she naps but don't overdo it! Time it carefully and then wake her up after whatever is the length of a normal nap at home.

Before bed, turn off all screens, no games, computers or TV's. Even if the light doesn't seem bright, this kind of light going in the eye supresses melatonin. Keep lights low as you read a book or do whatever your bedtime routine is.

If she gets up at night
-Keep lights low, no computers, TV's or electronic games.
-Feed her a snack, if she's hungry of something not too sugary, salty or greasy. Something bready works well, like a bagel or roll.
-Skip the teeth for this special situation. Going in the bathroom, flipping on the light, etc. may wake her up more. Your dentist will forgive you this once!
-Head her back to bed as soon as you can manage it.

Keep well hydrated. Air travel is very drying and dehyration symptoms are very similar to those of jet lag. You end up with a double battle. I try to stay away from caffine, althought a little green tea during the day seems to help me. If your doctor has restricted bottles or milk, you may want to "liberalize" that a little while she's adjusting and then go back to any restrictions. Needless to say, this is not the time to get rid of bottles or pacifiers, if she uses either or both.

I used to call a friend who would say that the whole family got up at noon two weeks after getting back because they were "getting over jet lag". We were over ours' in 2-3 days tops, with two more hours of time change than they had (I'm from further away).

So just hang in there. A little bit of disapline will make things much more sane for both of you.

Good luck!

When did your child start throwing tantrums?

Leah's Mom

My almost 15 month old threw a big one when we left the park, complete with back arching, kicking, screaming, etc. I felt bad. What do you do during tantrums? When did your kids start throwing them?

Answer
Around your child's age they start to get big. My daughter Sarah (child #3) was especially prone to them, because she is very strong-willed, has lots of energy, and shows her emotions easily. She would be super excited, or super giggly or really upset. She was sweet, but definitely not a subtle child. I never rewarded her for throwing a tantrum or gave her what she was crying and screaming about, but she would just get very upset or angry, sometimes just frustrated over a toy or situation, and this was her outlet. Sometimes she was overtired, overstimulated, or hungry and that was part of the reason that she would get out of control.

Handling tantrums:

1. Make sure your child doesn't get too tired, too hungry, or too stimulated as much as possible. This can prevent some issues.

2. React calmly. Your child may be out of control of his own emotions, but as a mom you have to keep your cool. If you can, continue what you are doing (i.e. leaving the park, shopping, eating), and respond to them calmly in a lull (I'm sorry, you can't have that today/it's time to go home now). Sometimes it worked for my daughter if she was deliberately fussing on purpose to say, "wow, look at all those people watching you cry".

3. If the child's actions or noise is a huge distraction where you are (library, church, etc), remove them calmly and quickly.

4. If you are at home, you can put them in a crib or in their bedroom and tell them, "I'm sorry you are mad/sad. It's ok to be mad/sad, but I don't want to hear screaming. It's too loud. You can come out when you are done crying. If you want to tell me something, you need to talk nicely and not scream." Sometimes they come out screaming and you have to deposit them back again. Eventually they will wear out and realize it's a lot of effort and it's not accomplishing much, but they can still have that emotional outlet if they need it. Sarah learned this, and eventually if she would get very frustrated or angry and start yelling she would run to her room all by herself and throw herself onto her pillow on her toddler bed and cry without me having to say a word. Then she would get over it and come out like nothing happened and I would hug her and we would talk about it.

We once were traveling across country and Sarah was cranky. We had stopped at a McDonald's for lunch and I asked her if she wanted to sit in a high chair or a booster. She kept changing her mind. The first two times I switched her because she asked. Then I said this time is the last time to choose. She chose the booster and I got her into it and she changed her mind and wanted the high chair I said no. She started screaming and crying. There weren't a lot of others in the restaurant and she toned down to a major sulk and she wouldn't sit in her booster. I told her ok, time out over here until you are done crying and fussing. When you are done you can come sit in your booster and eat your food. I had her sit near the table. We just started eating without her and left her food in front of the booster on the table. She sat there and sulked and pouted and whined a little for a few minutes. While she was sitting there I went to get some ketchup and overheard a lady (who obviously had no children) say, "Look at that, that's child NEGLECT." I restrained myself from dumping fries on the lady because she didn't know what she was talking about, and definitely didn't know my child. By the time I got back to the table my child had climbed up in the booster and was happily munching her kids' meal.

It's really hard having a strong-willed child when they are toddlers. The great part is that they grow up, and then that strong will benefits them because it turns into determination and drive for whatever they really want to do. Although it was a struggle when she was small to handle her moods and her will, this daughter was also the one who when she was a teen, always kept her room neat and always did her schoolwork, and she found an outlet for all her energy first in soccer, then in tennis. She's now 19 and in college, very happy, driven to succeed, and is very good at channeling her emotion into tennis, artwork, her job, cleaning her apartment etc.

Good luck!

Any suggestions on traveling with infant on a plane?

I will be traveling ALONE with my 10 months old son for a 15 hours non-stop flight very soon. Any suggestions on how i can make it easier on myself and on him? I heard about the sucking bottle when take off and land to avoid his ear popping. The travel agent booked us the very last row. but then I heard that the best is the bulk head. I am not sure having a big screen in front of me and my baby though. He crawls everywhere. Not yet walking by himself. What do i do to entertain him? Can I bring a electronic toys on board? Is there any traveling gear that I should bring with me? I will have a travel system stroller and the car seat with me. I am afriaid it will be really tough when we get to the screening. Just a bit nervous since I will be going alone. That's a long flight too. Please help.

So I'm trying to be conscientious of everyone and their budgets as I register for our first baby. I am currently listed for 2 (Target and Babies R Us) in hope that it makes for more convenient shopping for everyone involved. I'm having 3 showers (his family, my friends since I don't have family in the states, and work). We make more than his family, or mine and I want everyone to feel comfortable making purchases. I also donât want anyone to feel as if Iâm asking for too much. Itâs a delicate topic. SO⦠Is this a good amount of product or too much? Is it realistic? Too expensive? If you were a guest coming to one of the showers would you feel as if I were being too greedy?

Thanks so much in advance for your feed back!

Editing to add that my parents bought the crib, mattress, dresser and changing table. So that's taken care of. I'd buy it all myself, and don't really care if I have to. I just don't want to limit people. The only thing I might get sooner, rather than waiting is the carseat, since you never really know when you'll need it, and its kind of importaint....
Also failed to mention that I directly report to the owner and CEO of my company and I feel as if they'll get me a larger item for the work shower. So I feel as if I have to have something larger for purchase if that makes sense.
Thanks for your âhelp.â Iâm not really certain what you mean by obsolete as we plan on having more children and will therefore use these items again. Cribs and car seats arenât disposable where I liveâ¦

My registry is a list of items that I would purchase even if no one bought them for me. I donât need gifts. I can buy this all and it wonât affect my finances. People would want to stab me, as people really do want to have a village feel in a new baby. Iâd welcome any gift, and really even a card if that were all they can afford. It is not about the gift, itâs about celebrating my new baby!

Oh, and thanks for adding all this up for me. Now that I see the total, itâs not that much. I have friends that have spent that much on baby furniture alone. But I guess this is like the Olympics and youâre the Russian judge that low balls and nitpicks, and whoâs opinion just gets tossed out in the end. Thereâs always the bitter, jealous, negative-Nelly, and here and now itâs youâ¦

Good Luck.

Answer
okay this might shock you, but your grand total of things that you think you need for this first baby... is over two thousand dollars. i know cuz i added it up on my calcuator that's a lot of stuff and most of it will be obsolete in about a year. you could actually put a down payment on a house with money like that. i am not trying to be rude or mean in any way, but i do think you are going over board here.
here are a couple of my observations about your list... no offense just observations okay..
the breast pump is private should be purchased by baby's mom and dad
there are great stroller car seat combos for less than what you have the car seat listed for.
the spoons can be purchased at the dollar store
the humidifier should be bought by the parents if the child needs it
what did our grand parents do without a color screen baby monitor?
there are awesome pack and plays out there for under a hundred dollars (mine even came with a dual level mattress position and a changing center.)

p.s. before you get angry and think that i'm against the whole idea of these registries, cuz i'm really not, i just think that when a baby comes everyone usually brings really cool stuff to the showers and with you having three, i doubt very much that your little one is going to be missing out on anything.

Gifts for a newborn girl?

deb42278

A friend had a baby girl - a month early - and hasn't registered for anything and isn't well prepared. Does anyone know of any good things to get - lotions, toys, bottles, educational/developmental aids? Any help, greatly appreciated!
The mom had a c-section, any ideas on what she could use? Like a good lotion or cream for the stitches? Thanks!!

Answer
My daughter is now a year old and was born 3 weeks early. What we had to go by was some outfits to fit a baby from 4 to 7 lbs. as the newborn outfits were just to large and we had to search high and low to find preemie diapers.

Here is a list of other items that I received or would of liked to received as gifts.

1. Bumbo Seat - the child can use it once they have neck control. It puts the baby in a safe sitting position. Great for those babies that like to see everything. Also found it handy to take to resturants and put it on the table or bench, it was better than some of the highchairs that resturants offer. Can be found at Babies R Us for about $60 Cdn.

2. Portable Swing - this was great as we did alot of travelling to see family and this folded down nicely so that we could take it along and give our daughter something familiar. It also took up less space in our home as we are restricted for space.

3. Gift Certificate for Wee Piggies & Paws - mother and child life cast. Check out www.weepiggies.com I had this done when my daughter was 4 mths old and it's my favorite "art" piece in the house and it captured how tiny her hand was.

4. Items for when the baby is older. The new mom will receive a ton of stuff for when she is little and I truly appreciated the stuff I received that was for the older child, this included but was not limited to:
Infant toothbrush and infant toothpaste
Plastic bowls, sippy cups, spoons and forks, plastic plates
Step Stool for the child to reach the taps or step up to the toliet
Large bibs
Safety items for the house - outlet covers, cabinet door locks, toliet seat lock etc.
Wooden toy box

5. A really nice outfit or coat for the child in about an 18 mth size

6. A Grobag - this is a outfit that you put your child to sleep in, it helps them regulate their temperature, it has a zipper so for diaper changes at night the parents just unzip, change, zip up. It provides the child with a familiar sleeping "area" they learn when it's put on it's time for bed.

7. Create a scrapbook - leave space for the new parents to put the pictures in, attach sticky notes to each page that contain picture suggestions and ideas about the information they should record. I have done this for a few friends and everyone at the shower just loved the idea.

8.a potty for toliet training, booster seat for when they move from the highchair, toys for 3+mths, a push walker (check out the Fisher-Price Ride and Stride Car)

Other items that you can purchase that I think the new mom would appreciate include:

Bath tub with bath toys, hooded towels, wash cloths, Gerber Baby Wash in Lavender, they have a lotion as well

Diaper Bag filled with diapers of various sizes and makes (ie. Huggies, Pampers, Luvs etc.), wipes, diaper cream - I liked Ihle's Paste or try something more natural, small bottle of Purell Hand Sanitizer, rattle, bottles, if she is breastfeeding then breastmilk storage bags etc.

Get a basket and fill it with things that they will need later on such as: infant Tempra or Tylenol (for when baby get's it's shots), infant sun lotion - I like Coppertone Water Babies Spray, Bug Repellant - "In the Bush" Citronella Body Oil by Butterfly Weed Herbals, this is safe to use on infants and works well, a Braun ThermoScan ear thermometer, infant toothbursh and tooth paste, teething ring, beginner baby food etc.

Get a large bowl and fill it with beginner baby food, large bibs, fork and spoon set, bottles, sippy cups, cups with straws, plastic bowls, plates etc., a book about making your own baby food or preparing meals for toddlers etc. Just think about anything that would be used during feeding time for the child.

A vibrating chair

Baby Einstein toys, books etc.

A good breastfeeding pillow

Gift certificate for a photography session

I also had a c-section and for mom I would suggest the following:

Prepare some meals that she or hubby can pull out of the freezer and heat up

Offer to come over and do the laundry, wash the floors, vaccum etc. as they want her doing as little as possible for the first few days

Bring a basket (matches her room) filled with all the changing necessities - diapers, wipes, wash cloths, receiving blankets, a change of clothes, diaper cream, changing pad etc. and have her leave it in the room she is going to spend the most amount of time in with baby. This way it eliminates her having to go up and down stairs to change the baby. I did this, I just would change my daughter on the floor, it was great and so much easier on me (I tried the up and down the stairs thing).

A gift certificate for mom to go and pamper herself at a spa when she is feeling more up to it. Also include that you will be the babysister.

I hope my list of suggestions has provided you with some ideas. Good Luck.
