Terrifying children in the places they should be feeling the safest so that insecure gun lover can keep their toys?

The 2ND. Amendment, making loonies for 236 years and counting.
During the sixties there was not much anyone could reasonable do about a foreign threat. Domestic guns are not a foreign threat "fucking hell".

Answer
Yes. And then there are stories like these about "responsible gun owners":

Do conservatives ever get tired of being wrong?

Ohio CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN Senator Rob Portman changed his position on gay marriage.

Now that he knows his son is gay, he supports gay marriage. Just like Dick Cheney did.

Wow. They just barely got it. I learned about fairness and equality when I was a toddler.

Dreaded rear admiral,

I think most liberals learn about equality and fairness when they are toddlers. Conservatives don't get it until they are in their 40s, if ever.

Answer
"Wow. They just barely got it. I learned about fairness and equality when I was a toddler."

Wow. Every other toddler I've seen screams when you take away their toys. You probably composed sonnets at 2 1/2, too.

What are good car toys for a 2 1/2 year old?

sfox1_72

My brother and sister in law will be moving across country with my 2 year old niece. I thought as a going away present, I'd get her something that she play with in the long 4 day car trip. Any suggestions?

Answer
a magna doodle

is fantastic---in case you dont know, its a magic board on which you write and erase with NO MESS!

All the perks of a dry erase board with no inky fingers!

Mr.Potato Heads work well too---inumerable possibilities

fisher price casette player with kids sing a long tapes---also buy headphones---just in case your brother & sisNlaw get tired of "The Wheels On The Bus".

Most Leap Frog electronic products are fantastic---and I am not even that keen on electronics for children, but the Leap Pad systems actually teach, not JUST entertain. Buy the ones geared towards her age group.

a baby doll complete with its own carseat, so your neice will feel like someone else can relate to being strapped in :)

buy her a cute travel pillow/blanket set in a cute toddler theme. All themes are available---Dora the Explorer, Disney Princess, Clifford, Hello Kitty and more!

a sleeping mask to cover her eyes for when taking naps in the car during bright daytime hours--I found some of these in Winnie the Pooh for my kids---FIVE years ago and they STILL use them!

A really snazzy sippy cup and snack container.

A little travel suitcase---of her very own.

A little photo album with pictures of the people she is going to visit or the places she will see--even if you have to print some from the internet or cut them from magazines. It is amazing how interesting the Grand Canyon or a waterfall can seem in person to a toddler who has already been looking forward to seeing it.

GOOD LUCK to your bro & S.I.L. May they have Happy Trails

I have a toy rat terrier(6mo) and a 1 yr black lab. The lab is house broken but the terrier isn't. when I let him out side he does what he has to. But he still pees in the house please help me. this is 2 problems he wont let me know when he has to go out / how do i brake him???
I know how to house break dogs these are not my firsts. but this little one wont let me know when he has to go out so he goes inside... maybe i should let him out more often ?what do i do?

Answer
From rat terrier club of america:

TIPS ON HOUSEBREAKING?
You don't need to have a breed specific book to train your Rat. Get yourself a book on dog training, or check one out at the library. Click on the link if your interested in the RAT TERRIER BOOK.

Housetraining doesn't have to be difficult. It does however require consistency, knowledge about dogs and the right tools.

First you'll need the right stuff. A crate or cage is invaluable necessity that can be purchased at any Wal-Mart or Pet Store. A crate should be big enough for the dog to stand, sit and turn around comfortably. It is not a "jail" for your pet and once trained, many dogs will readily use there crate as "their room" when they need a nap, safe haven or a break.

The smaller the space a puppy has to wander about, the more likely their natural instincts to keep their sleeping place clean will be. A 100 or 200 crate is generally large enough for most Rat Terriers. (I use the medium size and put one of my old bed pillows in it for a pad. This "smells like you" and encourages your pet to use it and relives anxiety when youre gone too. Plus it's an excuse to buy new bed pillows :)))

Keep your puppy/dog confined [to a specific area] whenever you're not playing, holding or watching them explore his/her new surroundings. Watch their body language. If you see your pup begin to eliminate in the wrong place (sniffing the ground, circling, whining), clap your hands to stop them, and quickly take them outside or place them on a piddle pad or newspapers.

If you live in a condo or apartment, or have a busy schedule, or live where it's cold, use "*piddle pads." These 20" x 22" pads have waterproof liners to protect your floors, a special scent added to show the pup where it's OK to go and have an antibacterial ingredient added to decrease odors. (Can be used with a special pad tray or some have adhesive edges to keep them from slipping.) Move the pads towards the door. When indoor training is completed, place the pads outdoors where you want the dog to eliminate until they are used to going outside. (FYI: there is also a special puppy training spray available that can be sprayed on training pads, newspaper or outdoor area where you want your dog use too.)

When your puppy/dog first wakes up in the morning, before bedtime or has finished eating, playing or napping, pick him/her up and carry them outside (with hugs and kisses of course). And place them in the area where you want them to potty--the yard or pad.

If you chose to have your dog "go" outside, do NOT put the dog out by itself. They will only want to come back in with you. So you must stay there with them until they potty. Use single words such as "potty," "hurry" or "duty" as they eliminate and quietly praise him.

Wait for about 5 minutes. If they do not potty, bring them back in and then try again five to ten minutes later. With consistence, they will soon learn to associate the word with elimination. Reward this good behavior with praise and a treat (a snack or piece of kibble will do) and theyll quickly respond as dog's wish to please their owners. If you scold the dog, either verbally or by incorrectly "rubbing his nose in it", they'll be likely to avoid you when eliminating and "hide" it from you, making their messes where ever you aren't.

You should watch them like a hawk, and you'll be surprised how effective this is in preventing accidents. Soon you'll learn to read their signals. But there inevitably will be accidents no matter how hard you try to watch your puppy. Use a damp cloth to soak up urine, then use a solution of white vinegar, Oxy-Clean or commercial Dog-tergent to eliminate staining and help neutralize odor.

If you are having a problem with submissive urination, incontinence, marking or are traveling, try using a male dog wrap or pet bloomers for the girls. Male wraps are flannel belly bands with Velcro closures on them, that have a vinyl plastic liner to prevent leakage and to which an absorbent sanitary pad is added. Pet Bloomers are used for females that are incontinent or in heat.

Housebreaking does not take long, so hang in there and be patient and use consistency.

My normally "velcro" dog totally ignored me?

Eilean Ban

So about a week ago I had to go out of town for the whole day, and I was gone from 3am - almost midnight. Before people freak out my dog's weren't alone while I was gone, there were plenty of other people home with them the whole time I was gone.

My Toy Fox Terrier, Penny, is normally my "velcro" dog and follows me around everywhere, every time I sit down she jumps right up on my lap and she always has to be touching me. After I got home from being out of town, she completely ignored me for like 2 days after ward and just wanted NOTHING to do with me which is just so unusual. Even if I called her, she would just kind of pretend she didn't hear me and totally ignore me. She also usually plays favorites and if I'm in the room she completely ignores everyone else and only wants to be near me but after being gone she would go to everyone else BUT me. Like I said it's been about a week and now she's back to her normal velcro self and the odd thing is it's like overnight she changed back to her old self.

She seems to do this whenever I leave her for significant amounts of time, and I swear it's almost like she's punishing me for leaving her. I didn't think dogs were capable of that and I've never seen a dog do that! Is she really upset with me because I left? I know I'm not imagining it because everyone else in my house was shocked at how she was acting too.
Lori-

Yeah, I pretty much never go out of town or leave her for that long. But she is accustomed to me leaving her because I work and go to college full-time...

Answer
I think she could definitely be feeling miffed that you left. Are your trips pretty infrequent? She may be feeling vulnerable or afraid you weren't coming back. The more trips you come back from, the more used to your travels she will become. It just takes time to build up that trust.

Anyone ever take their toddler on a plane?

toddler toys for plane travel image

Lanna'sMam

I myself have only been on a plane one time. My daughter is 3 and we pretty much have to fly cross country. Any tips?

Answer
I fly with my son all the time. He is 21 months right now. The key is to keep them entertained and to fly with them on their routine as much as possible. For me that meant flying early in the morning or right after lunch. This way he'll take a nap on the plane, or be less cranky. I just took him to Hawaii three months ago - by myself. We traveled for 15 total hours between connecting flights and layovers. He got a bit cranky at times, but nothing too severe.

Bring candies for all of the flight attendants. Usually some chocolates. I did this because I told them that I would be hanging around the galley probably when he starts to lose his patience. Not only did they not mind me hanging out with them, but they were very helpful for me and constantly checked on me.

Bring tons of snacks that your toddler will like. I didn't bring electronic toys such as noise makers and video for him to watch. I read him books, let him play with a seat belt extender and he looked out of the window. When he starts getting out of control, simply take them for a walk up and down the aisle. If you must, go into the restroom and let them scream.

It is not easy flying with a toddler by yourself, but you'll be fine. Oh, one more tip to break the ice for your fellow passengers. I brought a huge bag of earplugs and offered them to everyone within three rows in front and behind me. Everyone laughed and said they didn't mind. But it took care of them looking at me the entire flight wondering when I was going to shut my kid up.

Any advices for traveling on an international flight with a baby and a preschooler?

Mod W

I am wondering if anyone could give me an advice for traveling on an international flight with a baby and a preschooler? I am planning a trip to visit my family in Thailand at the beginning of next year. My children will be 3 years old, and 4 months old. It is scaring to think about being alone with 2 little ones on a 20 hours flight from US to Thailand. Please let me know. I need an advance suggestions to prepare. Which airline is the best for traveling with the children?

Answer
bring some toys (noiseless ones would be very much appreciated by fellow flyers). Try to time your babies feeding so that it is happening during take off. Helps stop ears from popping and therefore no crying.

Bring books to read for them, snacks are good too. you may want to bring a comfy pillow for your toddler as the ones on the plane aren't comfy.

20 hour is an insanely long flight for them. wow! good luck. But just try to bring as many comforts of home and as many things to keep them amused as possible.

Good luck!

several questions for traveling long distances with a toddler sorry so long?

homemade travel toys for kids image

awesome mo

a couple friends of mine and i will be taking a road trip next summer about 6 hours away to visit our other friend who is in college in the city we will be visiting. My son who will be around 22 months old at the time is going too. If you have any advice at all, general or specific i will be glad to hear it. I also have some specific questions. We will be going for a week, driving out and back and staying in a hotel, 2 beds all 4 of us in 1 room. We will be driving a toyota rav 4, which is like a sporty suv.
please answer thoroughly and be as detailed as possible and I will be choosing best answer.

1. I am not sure what to do about sippy cups. I thought about taking juice boxes, but I don't want my son sucking down sugary juice that i can't dilute the whole week, plus i imagine he would get tired of that and that would mean no milk or water, just whatever flavor of juice box i brought. Not to mention that i absolutly cannot turn my son loose with a juice box and ESPECIALLY not in the car.He squirts and squeezes them everyplace. What can I do about the accumulation of dirty sippy cups?

2.What are some good travel friendly snacks to take along? either commercial brands or homemade or generic.

3.I have already thought to take some huggies or similar disposable washcloths and a bottle of kids shampoo. any other ideas on how to make bathing time easier while on vacation? i am assuming worst case scenerio is that he will have to shower with and their will be no tub.

4. What can I transport toys in and what can I store them in once were at the hotel? I know we will not be spending tons of time at the hotel but he will need something to play with in the car and before bed or when we are getting ready to go places. I know i will not need a ton of toys but i don't want him to get bored with his selection either.

5.Any other suggestions about traveling with a toddler? Anything I should not forget to take?

also i have never done this sort of thing before so i have no idea how much emergency $ is a good idea to take or anything like that.

Any tips on traveling period and traveling with a toddler will be greatly appreciated.

please star! thank u!

Answer
1, Some cartons would be a good idea, but i agree with the sugar concern. I tend to just give my daughter juice at lunch and dinner times. When i go on long trips, I tend to drink water from the sports cap type bottles. My daughter loves drinking out of these too and we normally just share one bottle. Also to save the mess from the cartons, when you've almost finished a bottle you could put the juice from the carton, that way the juice will be diluted too.

2. Raisins, sandwiches cut into little squares. fruit - banana's are out fave.

3. At 22 months, even if there was no bath, you'd be able to wash him in the sink! This will be quite an adventure for him too.

4. I would hightly recommend a Trunki. We fill ours up with toys and my daughter loves it, you can pull them along on it too! If you don't want to spend to much, then just a strong carrier bag would be fine, if you choose the toys carefully, you won't need to bring that many.

5. If you can borrow or buy a portable dvd player, that will make the trip much easier! Also i would very highly recommend tomy aqua draw mini mats. They come in a pack of 4 and are a drawing toy - but the pen is just water so no mess! Kept my daughter busy for hours!

As for general tips... it is very likely that any routine you had will go out of the window as they tend to sleep in the car when you don't want them too for example. So try not to worry and just let him sleep when he's tired etc, it sometimes works out better as you can stay up longer and are not tied to going back to the hotel room for bedtime!

Have fun

what are some good ideas for care basket items?

patsytheaw

hey guys
I'm a 14 year old girl,my best friend thomas passed away a month ago after fighting almost 7 months exactly of Soft tissue sarcoma.
We spent everyday at the hospital with him,and now that he's gone..I thought that I would feel relieved that I won't be going to the hospital anymore, but instead I feel like I SHOULD be going.
so,I thought that I could do something for all the people that are at the hospital now like thomas was.
I want to make care baskets that have little toys for the kids to play with (I plan on going to kosair) and then make homemade blankets and pillows for the adults that have to sleep in the uncomfortable chairs.
does anyone else have any ideas of what to put into the baskets?
I don't want a whole lot,I just want to show these people that they are not alone, because I know that thomas's family worried about that when they went to the hospital.
some stuff I have on the list already is food, art supplies, temporary tattoos, rubber duckies, stuffed animals
homemade posters of bands or people they like (me and my friend are good artists and I painted a psoter for thomas for his hospital room to liven it up and he loved it)
mix cds (I'll visit them and get an idea for what music they like)
oh whoops,I'm sorry I didn't make this clear
I meant food for the families, not the cancer patients
I understand that they usually can't eat anything like that, thomas couldn't eat by mouth for a long time
We took food to his family though and that was greatly appreciated by them

Answer
No food, especially not anything homemade. Many cancer patients are neutropenic (meaning their immune system is weak due to chemotherapy) and homemade foods/foods from home can be full of germs. Often, they wont be allowed to eat them.

Try things that can be easily cleaned or usefull such as...

Bubbles
Coloring Books
Crayons/Markers
Nail Polish
Toothbrushes/Toothpaste/Mouthwash
Baby Wipes
Small Toys (i.e. hotwheels)
Gift Cards!!! (for gas, or Wal-Mart, Target)
Hats
DVDs
Travel Size Games
Decks of Cards
etc.

I've been treated for cancer for almost 12 years off and on and I'm 18. All of these things are great. I just dont recommend food or flowers.
Hope I helped.

I'm creating a gift wish list for my daughter's first birthday. What new things did you need when your child turned one? The only things I can think of are a front facing car seat and a potty (which is way too early).

Also, what toys did your one year old really love?
We already got her a booster seat for eating. Yes, I knew about the car seat. We are getting one that holds a larger child but can go both forward and backwards.

music - anything musical that doesn't annoy you toooooo much
Books - there are touch & feel books, animal books etc
Fisher Price Little People - My son loves to play with them, they have little travel sets, and larger stuff. My son loves the house - and I've found older things like castles and stuff at garage sales.
Crayons & coloring books - can't go wrong with these!
Play-foods - Doug & Melissa have some cool wooden playfoods, but there are lots of other types out there. I set up a little kitchen using a small bookshelf for my son.
A ride-on toy - if you've got some safe area in your house for one of these, they can be great. My brother in law got my son a car that has a long handle and I can push him around the block - it's great! We have an indoor ride-on that he loves - make sure it's got a sturdy back to it.

You can get most of these these items used and they'd likely be in good condition, so while they may be new to your child, they don't have to be NEW new.

As for non-toys:
Booster seat is a good one - we've been using the Fisher Price travel seat that straps onto a chair, and it's good because you can bring it anywhere.
Pillow - I got one and took out half the stuffing so it was fairly flat. I then made some pillowcases out of flannel, but you can buy some if you don't sew.
Play furniture - a little table with chairs to sit at and color, or play on
Grow chart - I got one at this point because he could stand and get measured!
Spoon/fork/bowl/plates - toddler sized

what are the must haves for newborns?

pretty in

this is my friends email and she said i could use it. i just need to know some things that my baby cant live without when shes born. i have a tight budget so just the must haves please. and if possible could you put the price and how many of each item i need to buy a month. thank you!

Answer
The necessities for a newborn are these:

Diapers (don't buy a ton of newborn diapers because they grow out of them pretty quick. Start with one pack and if you need more, buy them after.) Pampers are about $20 for a box. I'd say we bought diapers every 1 1/2 - 2 weeks at the newborn age) There are cheaper diapers out there too, but we preferred Pampers.

Wipes (Buy in bulk if you can. Trust me you'll use them for everything.) Big box of wipes cost $7-12 depending on how big the box is and the brand name. They will last you a good while and the cheap ones are just as good as Pampers or Huggies.

Onsies and Sleepers. All the cute clothes can wait until later on. Trust me, the baby will spend more time in onsies than anything else.

If you will be nursing, get a Boppy/Nursing Pillow and at least a manual pump. They are a life saver. If you go back to work you'll need bottles and an electric pump. Make sure the pump is for woman who pump regularly. Some are only for occasional pumping and are not as good at keeping up a supply. Medela is great, but also expensive ($250 approx. for a double electric pump, but is worth the price). You can find them used for much cheaper, but you will want to buy all new bottles and pump parts. Replacement parts are not very expensive.

If you are formula feeding and when feeding pumped breastmilk, bottles are a must have. Make sure they are slow flow nipples for a newborn. I suggest buying some decent ones and don't go too cheap. You want some that reduce the amount of air your baby gets, so he/she wont be too uncomfortable after each feeding. It will also reduce spitting up.

You'll want a crib and mattress for sure, unless you will be co-sleeping. A changing table is nice, but definately not a necessity. We will just be using a changing table pad on one of our lower dressers. Crib Sheets, Mattress Pad. No need to buy an expensive bedding set. You aren't even supposed to use the comforter when they are a newborn either. It can cause SIDS, so you really don't get too much use out of it before they want a character bedding set. We bought a toddler bedding set at Walmart for $35 once our son was a bit older. Until then we just used some thin blankets we got from our baby shower.

You'll want a car seat. The hospital will not let you leave without one. The travel systems are a bit pricey, but well worth it. Once that baby is asleep, you will not want to wake him by lifting him out of a car seat.

That's all I can think of right now. Buying things used can save you a ton of money. Try Craigslist.org, but make sure things are not recalled and are not more than 3-4 years old. Many items have more safety standards and what not these days. Also, be careful when buying a car seat used. Make sure it has not been in any accidents. I really do suggest buying a new one. Sign up on websites for coupons and offers. Huggies sends out tons of coupons. Pampers kinds sucks with the coupons. If you'll be using formula you'll want to sign up and many will send you checks you can use at the store.

Can I bring buffalomilk for my 15 mnth old on board for long flight?

toddler travel milk on Don't cry over spilled milk. - My China Connection | My China ...
toddler travel milk image

adimt

My baby is not used to formula milk..her stomach gets upset with it. Does anyone know whether they allow buffalo milk in long-haul flights? If yes how much of it? Any suggestions in this regard are appreciated.
Thank you.

Answer
Reasonably, whatever milk your baby drinks, should fall under the same rules as formula or breast milk. The Buffalo milk is the baby's milk so you can point that out.

If you are flying a U.S. company, here is what the TSA says on the subject;

"When traveling with your infant or toddler, in the absence of suspicious activity or items, greater than 3 ounces of baby formula, breast milk, or juice are permitted through the security checkpoint in reasonable quantities for the duration of your itinerary, if you perform the following:

Separate these items from the liquids, gels, and aerosols in your quart-size and zip-top bag.
Declare you have the items to one of our Security Officers at the security checkpoint.
Present these items for additional inspection once reaching the X-ray. These items are subject to additional screening.
You are encouraged to travel with only as much formula, breast milk, or juice in your carry-on needed to reach your destination."

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm

If you are flying with a company of another nationality, look that up but worldwide, the rules are similar.

I would recommend that you try to buy it in tetra packs, especially if it is a long trip.

My son also couldn't tolerate formula. Soy was worse than cow's milk. No buffalo milk was available where we live. I tried all sorts of brands of formula and ended up using hypoallergenic, which was twice the price. You may want to talk to your doctor and try some, if you haven't already. If your baby is a little older, she may have outgrown her allergy.

If you have a long flight, more than 4 or 5 hours, it may not be practical to take enough buffalo milk. The problem isn't the origin but just bringing that much liquid in your carry-ons. Try to find some sort of powdered formula, even if only as a back-up. If you can find powdered buffalo milk, that would be ideal!

I also recommend the kind of bottles with throw away liners. Airplanes have really bad sinks for washing bottles. They don't fit under the taps very well so you would only have the nipple and ring to wash with the disposable liner bottles. I premeasured the powder ahead of time and rolled the liners up, placed them in a ziplock and had all the formula I needed in one small baggie.

Also, make sure whatever milk she takes is room temperature. Warming a baby bottle is unnecessary health-wise and a real pain to do while traveling. The Flight Attendants will warm the bottles on board but you want to be able to feed your baby anywhere easily, like waiting in line or while waiting for your flight.

Have a good flight!

how do u get babies to chew there food instead of us feeding them through a syringe?

Becky

My friend has a 1 1/2 year old little girl that is really sick. When she was born, she refused to latch on and have breast milk. She to this day cant eat solid foods and only can eat through a syringe. She is the hospital with a sever stomach ache, her kidneys are doing terribly and she has urine infection. The doctors in Guatemala just keep doing tests on her. What can we do to help this little girl? Is there also a way to get her to chew her food?

Answer
I don't know what medical care is available in Guatemala, but she could have some degree of kidney failure. Babies with kidney failure often do not have an appetite and will not eat. Some might take formula or fluids from a bottle or cup later, but might refuse solid food.

They need to determine what her medical conditions are first and treat those and they they can start to work on getting her to eat food by mouth.

Feeding therapy can be great in teaching babies/toddlers/older kid how to eat and/or try new foods/textures/etc. My oldest was born with kidney failure and had occupational therapy to help to get him to take a bottle (they had to add calories to it and know exactly how much he took in, so breastfeeding was not an option - I did pump for him until the doctors told me to stop). Later they worked with him on chewing and trying new things. My younger son was born with normal kidney function, but he has low muscle tone throughout his entire body. He could not keep a pacifier in his mouth at all and when he took a bottle, the milk or formula would just run out the sides of his mouth. He received therapy from a speech therapist to work on getting his jaw muscles strengthened and he also has some sensory problems that make it hard for him to be away of how much food he has in his mouth and how to move it around and things like that.

Kidney failure also tends to make you have a bad taste in your mouth, so everything tastes bad.

Also if she does have kidney damage, she may need a special formula or follow a special diet.

Are there any big children's hospitals near enough that your friend could take her daughter to one? I live in the US, so we are very spoiled with having access to medical care (although we could not get care for my son in our state, we had to travel over 13 hours each way to his hospital).

Here is a site where you might be able to get some information on medical help for this little girl.

Is it better to stay in Downtown Disney or a Disney Value Resorts?

toddler travel resorts on Fiji - Shangri La Resort
toddler travel resorts image

mama2ameli

I am traveling with a toddler so which is the best option for transportation and food.

Answer
It depends on your needs. You can bigger, nicer accommodations at non-Disney hotels for the same price as a value. By staying onsite, you have better bus service. Some of the non-Disney hotels have shorter commute times to the parks than value resorts though. Onsite you get EMH privileges, which can help a lot with a little one.

Food is always more expensive onsite than offsite. Quality is relatively the same. If you are spending all your time in the parks, I wouldn't worry about it either way. Of course, you should check-out the dining plan too if you are onsite. See: http://trifter.com/usa-canada/florida/evaluating-disneys-dining-plans/

Is it worth leaving Kauai to see the volcano on the Big Island while on vacation for 10 days?

s73

Is it worth island hopping? It is my husband and 2 year old son traveling. I think most of the lava tour boats won't even take a 2 year old. Do you see a lot just in Volcano National Park?

Answer
It ABSOLUTELY IS...for adults. But I am afraid to tell you that if you are going to take your toddler with you on the hikes, it is discouraged taking young infants and toddlers into Volcano National Park at the moment. The reason is that the main caldera of Kilauea is also active and there are bad days of "vog" (volcanic fog) which is toxic (sulfur dioxide fumes and sulfuric acid when it mixes with air moisture). In fact, the volcano park main visitor's center is frequently closed (there is another museum close by however).

You do not have to take a tour boat to see the lava, if you are willing to drive quite a bit south of Hilo to Kalapana (clockwise around the perimeter of volcano national park), past Pahoa on Hwy 130. From the end of the road where the lava covered the highway, it is a 3/4 of a mile hike over jagged lava mounds at night to see it glowing (bring a flashlight, no lights although some enterprising people sell some if you arrive in the early evening for about $6 with batteries). Also bring repellent...sometimes after substantial rain, there are thousands of standing pools of water in the new lava (nice and warm!) that breed millions of mosquitoes. You must arrive by 8PM to get in, they close the gates to new visitors past that time. Depending on the lava flow, you are currently not allowed any closer than about 1/2 to 3/4 mile from the lava because a bit dangerous at the moment so bring binoculars. This is because when the lava hits the water, it "freezes" instantly into lava rock and creates an oversteep ledge near the water that will eventualy overhang the ocean and then collapse without warning.

For toddlers, there is still a lot of sulfuric acid to sting the eyes and sulfer dioxide in the air here, even this far from the lava flow spilling into the ocean.

I know all of this because my brother just got back from visiting this place.

Because the lava has covered the southern part of the highway, you need to backtrack to Hilo.

Even without the Volcano National Park (which is admittedly spectacular), the Big Island is just simply the most exotic island in the Hawaiian chain. You feel it at the Kona airport already, it is hotter, most of the landscape is solid black lava. There is less coral here (island is too new) so deep-sea life comes close to shore...you can view manta rays at night at Keauhou Bay (along the coast of the Sheraton) which come to feed on the plankton attracted to the resort lights (there is no coral to keep them away from the coast). You can even sign up with a night dive to swim with them. If you take the Fair Wind catamaran cruise from Keauhou, you will frequently be followed by spinner dolphins and there is the chance of seeing schools of flying fish jump out of the water to fly away to avoid the boat. The City of Refuge archeological site near Kealakekua Bay is amazingly spectacular. There are black sand beaches. Akaka Falls is the prettiest (easily accessible) waterfall. Holualoa town above Kailua-Kona is famous for its Kona Coffee growers and is also an interesting artist colony.

bubblebutt

okay girls, please answer honestly..
what make or model do you have?
what do you like or hate about your pram/pushchair?

Answer
I don't currently own one, however, I'll list some I have used:

Graco--pretty much every make and model including the doubles. I love that they have a lot of storage and trays and cupholders. Some of the newer, higher end models have thermometers which aren't always accurate. The doubles are very cumbersome and hard to push (the front and back ones, not side by side). They also aren't as smooth of a ride as some of the others, but they accept nearly every car seat to form a travel system.

PegPerego-I love the Pilko systems best. All the features of a Graco but a smoother ride. I do not like the Aria twin--basically a double umbrella stroller and pushes like a child's toy--gets stuck in EVERY crack and crevice.

Evenflo-You couldn't pay me to use an Evenflo stroller. They are cheaper than the Graco strollers, but bumpier and a noisy ride. The trays also don't stay on very well. I'm afraid it'll collapse when in use.

Safety 1st-Cheap, but if that's what you're looking for, they'll get the job done. Not the most comfy and not the smoothest ride without the bells and whistles.

Quinny- Extremely smooth ride, not a lot of storage. Very easy to maneuver, no extra perks (ie cup holder, etc). I've never attempted to fold it.

Stokke- Smooth ride, again, not really any extra perks, looks like a space ship

Combi- Expensive, yet cheaply made. I wouldn't recommend one unless you need something lightweight for a specific destination--the wheels don't rotate all that well, either.

Mia Moda-Excellent strollers, some are a bit cumbersome, but overall really nice. Seem to have a lot of storage and all of the perks a baby and parents could want!

Valco Baby-Great stroller and if you buy the single, you can buy an attachment for a double later instead of buying a whole new stroller. It's a smooth ride, but a heavy stroller.

Bugaboo- This is by far my favorite brand for something lightweight and versatile. Maneuvers easily, even with a heavy child in it. I couldn't recommend this stroller more often--I love it. The biggest downside is the lack of storage on the stroller itself and the fact that it doesn't fold easily. However, I have no problem leaving the stroller open.

QUICK!!!! Name as many things that have to do with a baby boy (items, clothes, etc) that you can!!!?

What are you getting your toddler girl fro Christmas this year?

toddler electronic travel games on Hasbro Travel Guess Who Game Fun On The Run | Toys and Games Galore
toddler electronic travel games image

sackley738

I just need a few more things for my 2.5 YO and not really sure what to give her. She has a toy kitchen with ALL the accessories that Santa brought last year. SHe LOVES puzzles but we've already gotten a bunch of them. She also already had a doll house with most of the accessories. I was doing a lot of baby doll stuff as she is getting a baby brother a few weeks before Xmas and thought it would be a good way for her to get used to him and not crave soo much attention during feeding/diaper changes. So she will get a crib, high chair, travel seat and changing table along with smaller stuff for her babies. We also got her Tag Jr and a few books. I literally want like 1-2 more medium priced things between 20-40$. And then any stocking ideas. Also because it DOES make a difference for what she gets, she is classified as "gifted" and plays with most toys ranged for 3-5 YO's (aside from electronic games like vmotion ect because she doesnt have the coordination yet). But mentally she plays/learns like a 4 YO. So keep that in mind with suggestions pelase

Answer
We have a daughter the same age. She's such a little girlie girl. She's getting a vanity with with toy hair dryers, pretend make up ... etc. I'm sure she's going to love it. We're also going to get her some dress up stuff, since lately she's shown interest in playing make believe. So, we'll get her scrubs, firefighter uniform, whatever is available.

Hows this so far.. if I continued would you be interested in reading it?

m

Note that I didn't revise this, so there are probably lots of mistakes. Just what do you think of it so far, would you be interested on reading more? Also, the chapter isn't finished yet.. thats just the start.

thanks :)

BOOK: Puzzle Pieces

CHAPTER:Six Years

It had been nearly 6 years since I last went up to Maine for the Winter. I missed the snow, the skiing, the occasional deer; all the things that were non-existing in Florida. My old friend who I used to play with when I was younger moved to Maine, apparently in a large cabin near a ski resort his family owned. Luckily, that guaranteed us free season passes whenever we came up for a visit.
It was a pleasant 54 degrees in West Palm Beach. A few clouds that had a resemblance to cauliflower, and there was still morning dew left on the grass. The four bags we had were shoved awkwardly in the car, piling on top of each other like four clumsy bags of potatoes. Never mind the fact it was only my dad, my mom, and I traveling. Our fourth bag was filled with all our snow gear, that we finally found after 4 hours of searching down in the basement.
I walked outside and sat on the steps. Three months of staying outside in the cold.
âYouâll probably need an extra jacket to bring with you on the plain ride, and when we arrive. Itâs suppose to be 32 degrees in Maine!â My momâs hands flew up, we never saw those digits in Florida before.
âIâll be fine, mom. Iâll grab it out of my bag when we get there..â I sounded annoyed, but the thing was that my mom was a hoverer. She always hovered around us, she did that with my 19 year old sister, too. Lucky for her, she moved out.
âOh, are you sure? Please, take it for me,â I heard someone yell out from inside the house, âWe donât need it! We already have one shoved in the car, now lets go!â My mom yelled, I was pretty sure the neighbors could here us.

As I got out of the plane and walked out that long connector into the main place I saw Jasper standing there smiling; along with his mom and sister. It had been six years since I had last saw him, when I was seven and he was eight. I turned to look back and there was my mom and dad, my mom with her huge tote and my dad who already had on his grey and navy winter coat on. That was dad for you, always prepared and embarrassing at the same time.
There was Alice. She was standing next to her mom, playing with some electronic device. She was never much of a talker, not even as a toddler. She was always more focused on putting the blocks in the correct slots or trying so hard to color in-between the line, one of the things most toddlers never cared about.
Jasper walked over and game me a hug, boy I missed him. He was one of those guys who was really just your friend, could listen, could talk, and could totally either bore you or annoy you. His hair had darkened since the last time I saw him. I remember, it used to be a dirty blonde but now it was almost as dark as mine. He had it tousled gently, and I knew he must have used gel or some type of styling cream.

âHey Dakota, howâs it going?â He released me for a few second and smiled his crooked smile. The same one he had six years ago.
âNothing much, howâs the ski resort going? Itâs so great to see you.â I tucked my hair under my ear.
âAhh.. Its ok. We havenât had any snow yet, and our snow machines arenât working well. But yeah, its great to see you.â

We walked out of the terminal after getting our bags. The parking garage was surprisingly empty, only a couple other cars compared to the over thousands in Florida. Jasperâs mom found the silver minivan and we hoped in after putting the bags in the trunk. It was a typical car ride, catching up on things, and listening to the meaningless chatter. All I wanted was to ski already, even if the snow machines werenât working.

holy crud I just realized that.. snort

I like twilight, but I really had no intention to using those names... wow

thanks for pointing that out.

Answer
I didn't read it all. I lost interest shortly after I started. Sorry, good luck though :)

Answer
We went on an 8 hour flight with our 3 children last year and I found all sorts of things for our kids. There are these magnetic books where the kids can stick the magnets all over the pages to make different scenes. You can also get magnadoodles, color wonder paper/markers, CDs to listen to, etc... As far as actual games, There are lots of things you can download off the internet as far as car travel activities, like travel bingo. Familyfun.com has lots of things for free but if you want to purchase some other items, just google travel toys/games for kids and some things will come up. I went to Toys R Us to get most of our stuff for our trip. Just try to vary the activities every 1/2 hour or so.

Traveling with young ones?

Jen*

We are planning to take the kids to Disney World, and we are driving. The youngest one is three and I was wondering if anyone had tips on travelling with young children. And anyone that has taken their 3 year old to disney what was your experience?
Thanks

Our childrens ages are
Collin 5
Aaden 5
Bridget just turned 4
Hannah 3
Rock Candy( if you read what i wrote) it clearly states that we are driving.
It will be about a 20 hour drive. Im not changing my mind Im just looking for advice with what to do with young ones in the car.

Answer
we did a long drive with our 4 kids the last two summers.

i make a binder for each kid with a pencil holder in the binder that holds crayons, pencils, and stickers. besides blank paper for drawing, i include age-appropriate other things that i download for the computer -- for the 3-and 4-year-old, try coloring pages and maybe some very simple dot-to-dots or mazes; for the 5-year-olds, you can include harder mazes, easy sudoku puzzles, color-by-number, easy crosswords, word searches, etc. If your 5-year-olds are reading yet, you can also include a list of the states and they can cross things off as they find license plates from those states. Depending on your kids, some 5-year-olds can also play battleship (print out two grids on one piece of paper, one for their ships and one for yours, and call out coordinates to each other). oh, and roadside bingo ... print out a bingo grid with pictures of things you might find along the road and let them look for them and cross them out. or have the kids try to find all the letters of the alphabet (in order) in signs or license plates.

i also give each kid a knapsack they can reach with their binder, lots of books, a little package of snacks they can ration over the course of the drive, a couple little animals or dolls who can play with each other, and occasionally another small toy like magnetic checkers (you can also get magnetic chutes and ladders, etc.).

also lots of I-spy, singing games, guess who i am, etc.

most importantly, lots of stops. do some research ahead of time and plan the best places to stop for a couple hours. preferably at kid-friendly venues like a children's museum or playground or at least a mcdonald's with a playspace.

i expected disaster with my kids (for our longest roadtrip over 4 days my kids were 7, 5, 3, and 1), but it was a blast for all of us. hope you have fun.

Tony

Really struggling to think of something for him to play with while we're out and about, ideas?

Answer
Books:
You could get picture books(ones that he only uses in the car). Get a few books and rotate them so they seem new. I like the large board books that are basically a bunch of pictures of objects.

Another idea is books on tape. You child is a bit too young to follow along with the book, but he may enjoy listening to the story.

Portable DVD
A portable dvd and a favorite video will keep some children occupied while they are in the car. While I often do not advocate tv, if this is the only time he watches, it will defiantly keep his attention

Magnadoodle/Etch-a-sketch
These a great since they allow drawing without the mess of crayons or markers. There is also an aquadoodle travel, which is also good for mess free drawing.

Magnets and board
Get a box of magnets, and a magnetic board. Your son can stick the magnets to the board. Be sure you get enough magnets so if some are dropped, he still has many left.

Puzzles
There are some great puzzles that have doors to open, or pieces to move. Puzzles such as this http://www.target.com/Educo-Mighty-Motors/dp/B000GYSYCQ/sr=1-6/qid=1243736486/ref=sr_1_6/182-7501416-0677319?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=0&rh=k%3Atravel-toys-car&page=1 and http://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-383-Latches-Board/dp/B000062SP5/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1243736991&sr=1-4 are great for traveling in the car.

I'm just a little Worried taking my boy out of the country cause he is so young I'm not sure how he would adapt I know my 5 year old girl would
Be fine. it's for 7 days should I be worried about it ? It's there any tips to make it go more smoothly also I wouldn't want any thing bad to happen down there please help ! Thanks

Answer
Generally traveling withs kids can be great for the whole family (no matter what age) if the following is true:
1) you go to a kid friendly destination (high chairs, kids food, kid pool, babysitting, etc)
2) you can maintain your cool during a 5 hour flight with a 2 yr old (this is a not a combination as 2 yr old hate to sit still but can not yet understand why they have to... take as much entertainment as you can - iphone games, books, toys, snacks, change of clothes, etc)
3) you take precautions necessary to ensure you are all safe (pool safety, shots / medicine if required, car seats, etc)
4) you adjust your expectations of what a holiday is... you may find yourself reading a book in bed at 8 pm b/c the kids need to go to sleep, instead of out for nice dinners or drinks as a couple...

I don't think there is anything wrong with taking your child out of the country at any age.

How much should I expect to spend at Disneyland?

I am taking my son to Disneyland this summer. I've already figured costs for travel, the hotel stay and tickets, but am wondering if anyone who has been somewhat recently knows how much I should expect to spend in the park? My son is only 3 years old and this is the first trip for both of us. I'd like to buy a souvenir or two and we will be eating lunch and dinner at Disneyland. There will be a bunch of people in our group, but I will only be spending money on myself and my son. Any idea how much I should plan for or any money saving tips?

Answer
I'll start with the Food, there are several places in Disneyland that are a great price for Lunch and Dinner and because the meals are so big at some of these places I would share with your 3 year old, I go to Disneyland quite often and I share all my meals with my boyfriend and we both end up really full. If you really don't feel like sharing and want to get kids meals for him allot of the restaurants and counter services have a Kid's Meal and a Toddler meal depending on how much you son eats the Toddler meal is about $3.50 and the Kid's at $6.50 and they both include a drink. Honestly once you see the size of the meals at Disneyland I'm sure you will end up deciding on sharing.
My Favorite places for Lunch and Dinner are Rancho del Zocalo it is mexican food and is great portions if you were to get a meal and a drink and share with your son, because they also have refills you would spend about $10-15 for everything.
Cafe Orleans is great for lunch because even though some of there meals are about $15.00 a piece I go there and get a couple of starters for lunch like Gumbo & Pommes Frites and get a lunch for $10.00. It's an idea you can use at allot of places get a couple of starters and it is sure to fill you and your son up for lunch.
A great spot for Dinner is PCH Grill it is at Paradise Pier and is about a 10 minute walk but they have great food and great prices. Here is a great site that I've always use it has the menu's for all of the Disneyland Resort and prices this way you can look at it and decide what you think is best.

A money saving tip is to bring along a water bottle for you and your son so one you stay hydrated and also so you don't have to pay for drinks the whole time. If your son doesn't like to drink just water you can get a box of a flavored drink and mix it into the water.
Another thing would to bring a snack that he like's that way if you are standing in a line or take a break you can pull out a snack.
If you are a Coffee drinker you can get a reg. coffee at Blue Ribbon Bakery and if you save your receipt you can get a free refill al day that is sure to save you money.

As far as souvenirs there is and such there are a couple things you can do one is if you what an autograph book you can make one for allot cheaper then they sell them, go to Target or Walmart and get a notebook then decorate it in the characters your son like's he'll have something more personal then the books that they sell.
If you want to get a shirt there it is about $15.00-35.00 depending on the shirt your are looking for, Toys can be anything from $5.00-50.00 depending on the toy of chose, if you have your heart set on getting something from Disneyland I would plan at least $50.00 for each of .
There is a Character Warehouse about 10-15 minutes away and they have allot of stuff that Disneyland sent to them and there shirts and toys are allot cheaper you could get something for your son there and then surprise him with it mid way through and that way he still has something special to celebrate the time at Disneyland.
Also a couple of free things he may like if you are celebrating something Special make sure to go by City Hall in Disneyland and get your free button, also you can ride the Fire engine down Main Street and after they will give your son a Jr. Firefighter Sticker with Mickey on it, I am sure he would love what little boy doesn't want to be a Firefighter.

Well I hope this helped you and enjoy your trip! *Jena

hi my little one has been invited to a disney birthday party an id love for him to dress up!!!!but really find it hard to find a decent variety of costumes for disney in his age group, would really love to find a woody outfit for toy story!!!!!! or jus something cute!
thanks everyone xx

Answer
Hello

Your best bet would be the Disney Store but if there isn't one near you, like there isn't one near me, then you may have to travel a bit to get to one. But I'm sure there would be the perfect outfit there.

The answerer above is correct, there does not seem to be a woody costume for his age range. But these are some I did find for his age range if you would be willing to change the costume:

What are some good quiet car toys for long trips with toddlers?

I have ADD so loud toys in the back seat can be a bit distracting while driving. I thought about coloring books and crayons but if they are dropped she can't reach them because of the safety harness and they can melt when left in a hot car. I am going to get some board books but would like other suggestions.
I'm looking for a bit of a low tech solution.
I'm fine with music, it usually helps me focus really.

Answer
Yeah, crayons are a pain in the butt in the car! My car seat is covered with melted crayon, and it doesn't come out easily!

Have you considered DVD players? They're not so noisy that you can't deal with it. And they'll keep the kids seriously busy and quiet. You could even try to get them to wear earphones so that you don't have to hear it at all. But when we travel, we use a laptop to play movies, and connect it to the car's audio system to get great sound.

How long is the trip? If it's more than a couple of hours, plan on frequent stops and carry a good variety of snacks. You'd be surprised how long a bag of fruit snacks or animal crackers will keep a child quiet, especially if it's a favored snack or one she hasn't ever seen but likes.

Good luck!
