traveling with 6 month old?

Heaths Mom

coming up in July i am going on a family trip its a good 2 day drive we are planning to make lots of stops on the way just wondering about traveling with a 6-8 month old he will be 8 months but hes behind 2 right now! we going for 3 weeks staying a week at families house and a day or two at others! so just wondering ideas of how to keep him busy and if anyone else has done something like this???

Answer
For Thanksgiving I traveled from IL to PA with my 6 month old daughter, it was an 8-9 hour drive, and we stopped every 2-3 hours. She did very well, I was pretty surprised. I made sure she had her favorite blanket on her, comfortable clothes, kept her bottles and bottle warmer close at hand, and a few of her favorite toys. I also sat right beside her the whole time, so I think that made her feel a lot better, had my sister play happy music on the radio (like soft rock or something like that, nothing loud or disturbing). Also, we left around 6 in the afternoon, so it was pretty close to her bedtime, not sure if leaving late is in your plans, but it made it easier because she didn't want to get up and play being so close to night time.

So I basically just talked and played with her and her toys until she was tired and fell asleep. Not sure if this helps any, but I wanted to share my advice! Good luck on your trip.

p.s I would suggest when your ready to go to sleep when at your families home, try to keep your baby close to you in a pack n play or something like that to make him feel more secure because he wont be familiar with the room and area so it may freak him out a little, I'm sure you were planning on doing that anyway, just wanted to mention..

Can anyone recommend any good toys for a 9 month old boy?

fruitytutt

I think that my son is really bored when we're at home. He doesn't have many toys (as we've never really felt the need to get them till now). He loves books and has quite a few but I wondered whether anyone could recommend some good toys for him?

Thanks

Answer
The best toy in our baby-toy arsenal has been the Fisher Price Stack and Roll Cups.

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2783732

We bought them when my son was around 9 months, and he is now 18 months and STILL plays with them. They are versatile (you can stack them in any number of ways, or put two cups together to make a ball), they help teach colors, numbers, shapes, and size, and (best of all) they are BLESSEDLY SILENT. So many of kids' toys make noise, play music, etc, but these are just simple and quiet. These are the one thing we always make sure to take when we travel, and we always buy them as baby gifts. They are only $10 at Toys R Us. Enjoy!

Does anyone own a Metro Venture Travel System?

lillitiaph

I'm having a baby in April and already looking for a suitable travel system. The amount of choice is quite baffling, and I've been unable to find a review of this travel system, so does anyone own one or could recomend a good system?
Thanks

Answer
hi its only just come out in toys r us i really like the look of it my baby is due feb might hold out until jan sales!! see if it goes down... most graco travel systems r good

What do you think of the Baby Trend brand stroller/car seat travel system?

wonderingi

Particularly the "Venture" style. And, did anyone order it direct from the website? If so, where can you take it if there is a problem?

Answer
Love the stroller, hate the car seat, would never buy the travel system.

You can try out the strollers or at least some of the models at Target and Toys R Us/Babies R Us. I love them, they're comfortable for my kids, easy to maneuver, easy to go through sand, dirt, grass, whatever, and I haven't tried out a nicer stroller. I love the large wheels that are bicycle wheels so that it's easy to fix them and for them to go over obstacles. :)

However, I don't like the car seat because you can try them at Target as well, and you have to put the two hooks together then push them into the seat-belt latch, and when working with a restless baby that would be a nightmare. Graco and other infant seats let you push in one side then the other, which makes it a lot easier when you're working with a restless baby.

I also don't like people putting the baby in a car seat outside of the car. It makes the car seat at risk for knocking against things and becoming damaged, as well as it curves the baby. SIDS research says over and over that we need to lay the baby flat or be carrying the baby, and research has proven that while car seats save their lives in an accident you should limit their time in a car seat (or anything that tilts them) to less than 3 hours in a day and no more than 1 hour at a time, and basically not use it in anything but the car.

So the stroller is nice, get the stroller, but order it through something like Target or Walmart's or babies r us so that you can take it there if there's a problem. Skip the car seat, get one that is better and will work better. Carry the baby for the first 4 months, either your arms or a Moby Wrap for a cheaper alternative to something like an Ergo, it's really not hard. Do a search on car-seat breathing and you'll find the studies done about the dangers.

Add: Looked at the stroller. It's not the jogger that I prefer. If you're going to go with that style of stroller, look at the Chicco strollers. They lay completely flat, so it's better for the SIDS aspect, and have better reviews. I honestly wouldn't get a Baby Trend stroller that's not the jogger because they don't push well, don't maneuver, don't move well. It's all about the wheels and those little wheels always are a pain in the neck on strollers.

This is one similar to what I thought you were talking about. They're approved for babies about 2 months up.

Anyone have recent experience traveling with a toddler?

We are taking our 2-year-old daughter to visit my family for Thanksgiving. I'm pretty anxious about the trip. We went down two years ago, when she was just a 4-month-old infant, and it was not terribly difficult, but this was before the new travel restrictions - and before she became mobile, willful, and inclined to fuss and scream when her immediate needs aren't being met.

We're taking a car seat to use on the plane (she is a ticketed passenger), and an umbrella stroller. Any problems getting these items through security (MDW and FLL)? How much extra time should we allow, and does anyone have tips for keeping her entertained and relatively happy during the 3-hour flight?

Answer
You'll be fine. It's no big deal if you plan ahead.

I have travelled quite a bit with both my kids. I've even done it solo. It can be daunting but I have learned a few tricks.

1. It sounds like you already have your trip booked, but just in case, try to book a flight that coincides with your little one's natural sleep pattern so she is more likely to sleep on the flight. Her natural cycle combined with the white noise of the airplane will likely have her nodding off before take off. Even if it isn't her normal sleep time, the white noise makes a lot of kids very groggy.

2. You're smart to take a stroller. If it's a small, umbrella type, you'll breeze through security. You'll have to take her out and collapse it so they can run it through the machine. If it's a bit bigger, it takes a few minutes extra for them to examine it by hand. It's still pretty easy. I actually took a double jogging stroller this last trip. It was no more difficult and actually made my life easier.

3. If she has a little backpack, let her carry it on. If she doesn't have one, find a small bag that can be her personal carry on bag. My oldest loves having his own bag. Stuff it with small toys with a few that she has never seen before. These don't need to be fancy. Just little things. I sometimes wrap a couple like gifts to open to add to the distraction factor. I alway take crayola wonder coloring books and markers. The markers only write on the special paper and they are non toxic if they go in the mouth. If your daughter is a thrower, be wary of things that serve as projectiles with other passengers as the targets. My son loves little animal figures and action figures. Two of those and his imagination keep him happy for ages. If she has a favorite blanket or stuffed animal, let her take them on the plane. Don't worry about trying to fit the blanket in a carry on. Just hang it over the stroller or stuff it through a loop on one of the carry on bags. If she's a DVD watcher, bring one of those little DVD players and a couple of her favorite movies. Be aware that she'll need to use headphones and you will want to test the volume to make sure her ears aren't damaged.

4. Bring a sippy cup and her favorite snacks. Most flight attendants will happily pour some juice or water into the sippy cup for you. ( You can't bring liquids through security). A variety of snacks will keep her happy at intervals. Drinking the juice while taking off and landing will help her ears immensely.

5. Leave at least 20-30 minutes extra time. You may not need the extra time, but there are usually those unexpected moments with young children. If you need the extra time, you'll be glad you planned for it.

6. Get a bag for your carseat. They are a nightmare to carry without a bag. Dex makes one with a single strap that lets you carry the car seat like a backpack.

http://www.babyant.com/bv550165.html

It will fit any carseat made. Just put it in the bag before you leave, when you have more space and less pressure in your home than you would outside the airport. Don't worry about taking it out of the bag to lock it in. YOu can just unzip the bag and slide it down the sides of the car seat leaving the base in the bottom of the bag. You will need to plan for a few minutes for this to get through security. Some carseats are too big to go through the machine, so they check it out by hand. You can also stuff any blankets or toys in the bag with the seat to carry.

7. At security be prepared for the following. Everyone, including your daughter, will need to remove their shoes and jackets to run them through. You will need to take her out of the stroller and run that through security. This gets a bit hectic if you have a lot of carry on gear, and travelling with kids usually means you do have a lot of carry on gear. You cannot take liquids through, so any sippy cups will need to be empty.

8. When you get to the gate, inform them that you have a stroller to gate check. If you have a connection, let them know you want the stroller brought up at the connecting airport. They will give you a pink tag to put on the stroller with all of your flight info. You will wheel this down the area way and take your daughter out and collapse the stroller just outside the plane. Just leave it there, and they come get it to stow it underneath and bring it up when you arrive at our connection and final destination. It sometimes take a few minutes for them to bring it up, so no need to rush off the plane.

9. When it comes to boarding, most airlines allow people with young children to board first or early. Even if they don't mention it, push your way through. Getting that carseat buckled in with a line of people behind you is stressful. Give yourself as much latitude as you can to make your trip less stressful.

10. As you're seating yourself, make sure your daughter's bag and your bag with any goodies for her are easily accessi

Traveling with a toddler for the first time?

Drea

I've never taken her anywhere with a commute longer than 45 minutes so I'm kind of worried how she will do. The airplane ride is 2 hours to Texas with a 3 hour layover (heard the airport is pretty big so thought I would allow myself time to change, feed, & find our gate) then it's a pretty quick flight to Roswell NM (our destination)

Ok to my question, To moms who have traveled with their little ones are there things I can do to make my daughter more comfortable? Will I be allowed to bring food for her on the aircraft? Milk? Juice? Will they charge me to gate check my stroller? Will her diaper bag count as my carry on (she's a lap infant)?

Answer
I've never flown with a toddler, but I've done a couple 6-8 hour drives with my son. The only thing I can suggest is that you bring snacks (the airlines should let you take them on the plane), and a few toys/books to keep her occupied. You may also think about keeping her awake as long as possible before the flight, in hopes that she'll sleep through it.

They won't charge you to gate check the stroller, and since most airlines allow you to take a carry on as well as a "personal bag" (i.e. purse), you can have the diaper bag and something else. If you carry a purse as well, just stuff the purse into the diaper bag, or your other carry on when you board the plane.

Here's a website with some more information, including regulations on bringing milk/juice/snacks:

traveling with a toddler?

I DONT CAR

first let me say i put it here cause no one wanted to answer me in the travel section.

Okay, me and my daughter are going just out of the city, from dallas, tx to San antonio.
My daughter is 16 months, and i understand that i dont have to pay for her but, this is what ill have w/ me.

ill be carrying her, and have her backpack/diaper bag with me.
Do i need any kind of identification for her?
ill have 1 suitcase w/both of our things in it, plus her carseat..
i understood from a relative traveling that they weigh your bags, and we all know carseats are heavy! they almost charged my mom 50 bucks for whatever was in her bag a fwe weeks ago!
is this true?

how do i travel with a carseat?
i mean, i picture myself walking thru a crowded airport, holding my daughter in one arm, pulling the suitcase with is somehow holding the carseat!with the other and holding a piece of paper trying to find out where im suppose to be going!!
dont know how im going to do it?
any suggestions?

Answer
Contact the airline you will be flying with. They should be able to answer all your questions. You should not need identification for her, but again, ask them this question. Your carseat should be able to be counted as a piece of luggage. Each airline is different with their rules. Good luck!

I will be travelling from Europe with my toddler (we´re american), and will have to pick up our luggage,?

lola

and i will have 2-3 hours to make my connection to a national flight. Question is, which airport would be nicer (shorter lines, less people, nicer staff, easy to get around, etc): Dulles International or Chicago O´hare?
Also, what´s the Toronto international airport like? we may connect there on our way back to Europe.
Thanks!

Answer
Definitely O'Hare. Avoid those "people movers" at IAD.

I'm a former Flight Attendant and I flew to those airports a lot. I also was stuck in security so long once, flying alone with two small children that I missed my non-stop and had to fly through Dulles instead. It was snowing and those people movers were cold...

Toronto is fine as a connection point too. Find out what formalities you have to go through when you get there. I "pre-cleared" Customs leaving there as a passenger so when I arrived in the States, I simply walked off the aircraft as if I were arriving from a domestic flight. That was nice!

If you're alone, I recommend you have some sort of carrier for the toddler when going through U.S. Customs. I've used a sling and a backpack. Don't depend on getting help through there and you have to claim all your bags even if flying on to somewhere else. You need to be able to load all your gear on to the cart and push it. Have the child "attached". If using a stroller, fold it up and put it on the cart with the luggage.

After you clear Customs, look for the signs to "Connecting Flights". Your bags will already be tagged to your final destination. Hand them over to the airline personel who will send them on to your connecting flight (there are counters with those baggage belts behind). Then you can open up the stroller and put the toddler back in it before walking to your connecting flight.

I'm glad you've given yourself enough time. It might take up the whole 2-3 hours to do all that on your return. For your departure, it'll be much eaiser but that extra time will mean that your first flight can be delayed without stress. Remember that you have to go through security at all connections now.

Here's a TSA page you might want to check out about kids and security;

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/index.shtm

I fly transatlantics about every 6 months, alone with my three kids. The youngest just finished her 6th round trip, plus all the other shorter flights we do a year. I wrote an article on the subject about 8 years ago since I have both the practical and professional experience with this adventure. I put it on a blog to share with other parents, many of whom have contributed over the years. It's totally non-commercial.

Minimalist,essential list for baby shopping?

Christina

I live in a one bedroom apt so space is an issue with me,which is also why there won't be a baby shower. What is your idea of a minimalist baby list? I've decided on a pack n play against crib already for space.also what's your opinion on bouncer vs swing?I'd really like to get only one of the two

Answer
Would a convertible crib from Ikea be better than a pack n play? It would certainly be more comfortable for the baby. If you got a crib top changer and under crib storage drawer from a reputable baby shop it would take up barely any more room than a pack n play and has the advantage of turning into a toddler bed later on. The underbed storage drawer can be used for storing baby linen and clothing if you don't have room for a dresser.
You'll want a stroller and a car seat. Given you have limited space I'd be looking at getting an umbrella style travel system like the The First Years Wisp or one of the Peg Perego ones.

I'd hold off on buying either a swing or a bouncer. My kids hated the swing and if I had known before my third that they were just as happy to sit in the stroller as they were to sit in the bouncer I would never have gotten that tripping hazard in the first place!

Toddlers and Disneyland???

Q. Hello I'm gonna be taking my 1 and 2 year daughters to Disneyland THIS weekend! ANd I wanted to know what other Moms suggest I take with me? (to make my trip go smoothly)

THanks a lot
I have plenty more things on my list, but i'm not listing them all. I just wanted to see if anyone went and said "Oh Geez I wish i would have broung________" SO yeah. LOL ANd of course i'm gonna bring a stroller I thought that was a given!. Ha

Answer
I also make sure to take ID information. I make up little cards with a recent picture of my child, and pertinent information. I list name, age, weight, height, any identifying birthmarks, allergies, and use a stamp pad to put their thumb print on it as well. In case (God forbid) that they ever got separated from me in that huge place, I would have instant, comprehensive information that could help find them. I also make sure to take a digital picture of them as soon as we get to the park so that I have a photo of what they are wearing that day (you can't always remember all that info when you are in a panic). I also had ID bracelets made up for my kids that they wear to theme parks that have their name and me and my husband's cell phone numbers on them. This is a good idea to have on them because your two year old is small enough they couldn't tell someone how to help them. All these things will help get your child back to you if they are ever lost (which hopefully will never happen, but I'd rather be prepared than at a loss in an emergency). If they have serious allergies, list that on the bracelet as well. I got mine at: http://www.makemethis.com/ for around $6 each.

Other things I pack for Disneyland:
- small first aid kit with bandaids and ointment: scraped knees happen, even at the "Happiest Place on Earth" : )
- Tylenol: even the best mommies can only take so much "It's a Small World" : )
- water bottles that you can refill
- pajamas: in a separate bag, pack pjs (I change my kids in the restroom right outside Disneyland when it is time to catch the tram back to the parking structure so that when they crash out in the car, I don't have to try to get them into pjs at home), and put light jackets in that bag too, and leave it in a locker on Main Street. If you need them when the sun goes down, you can go back to the locker to get them instead of dragging the bag around all over.
- Take advantage of Disney's customer service. Anything you purchase during the day can be sent to the customer service area in Main Street where you can pick it up as you leave. Much easier than carrying it around all day.
- Hats- for everyone... the sun will be brutal regardless of sunblock. Or, make that your souvenier!
- Pack all your stuff you will be carrying in a backpack. It makes it much easier to take on the rides with you. You won't want to leave it in the stroller while you wait in line.
- Bring a bike lock for your stroller. Just a simple combo one will do (like $3 at Walmart) to lock your stroller to a fence when you park to go on a ride. Yes, stroller theft is very uncommon, but it does happen. Insure you have a stroller to come back to, especially if you have an expensive travel system one.
- Copy of kids' medical/immunization records, and their medical/insurance cards: again, just in case.
- Camera!! : ) You don't want to miss the shots with Mickey!

Other tips for Disney:
- Go to Toon Town first. Get in line to see Mickey at his house first thing, 'cause later in the day, you could wait up to an hour and a half to see that mouse.
- Head to Fantasyland second. Dumbo and friends also fill up quickly, and you don't want to wait an hour to see Snow White- even if your toddler does.
- Skip the Winnie the Pooh ride. It's too psychodelic for little ones, dark and scary.
-Eat at unusual times. Eat at 11:00 instead of 12:00, and save yourself the line waiting and difficulty finding spots to sit.
- Even if you don't think your excited child will sleep, try to do something slower and more relaxing during their usual nap time so they can wind down a bit (take a jungle cruise, go on the monorail).
- If you get there before the gates open, take part in the "stroller brigade" led by the Mad Hatter and Alice. It is for all those in a stroller. They do a cute dance with the band playing in the background.
- Have fun!!

Toddlers and airplanes?

Im leaving in 1 week for vacation with a 17 mo old toddler and need advice on keeping him occupied, and what to do about his ears during landing and takeoffso hes not too uncomfortable with the pressure changes.
It a 2.5 hr flight.

Answer
Thank goodness it's a short flight! This is a tricky age to travel...

It's actually a myth that children need to suck on something for take-off and landing. I rarely saw it in my 13 years as a Flight Attendant and my third child, 3 1/2, just finished her 7th round-trip transatlantic flight. That's not counting all the flights I've made with her older brother and sister before. All have flew for the first time at 4 months of age and I have never, ever done anything special with them for take-offs and landings.

ENT specialists simply recommend that the child is awake for landing;
http://www.entcda.com/AAOHNSF/earsandaltitude.htm

The delicate time is not during take-off or landing/touchdown but at the *top of descent*. This is usually 40 minutes to an hour before landing and everyone's ears have to reverse the pressurization. I can confirm that when I worked, if any passengers had ear problems, this was the time. Not just children either! They actualy felt *better* as we got closer to landing.

The BEST way to avoid ear issues is to take your little guy to the doctor a few days before flying. My son was good at getting symptomless ear infections. Make sure yours' doesn't have one of those! The doctor will look in his ears and make sure they're clear and infection-free. Healthy ears can handle pressurization changes.

Meanwhile, I do recommend that he have his own seat and that you bring his carseat along. This is the only way to fly safely with any baby. Lap children are allowed because statistically, flying is so safe, there's very little chance of anything going wrong. If it does though, a lap child has no protection.

First check that your seat is FAA approved IF you are flying a U.S. airline (check with your non-American airline if not).
http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

If you haven't booked a seat for him, call the airline and see if the flight is full. Then, at check in, ask nicely if you can have an empty seat next to you to place your carseat in. They often do this for families.

I will say that my toddlers were much more settled and much easier when they were in their familar seat. Not to scare you but some parents haven't been able to keep a hold of their little ones and have been "off loaded" as a result.

http://www.usatoday.com/travel/flights/2007-01-23-airtran_x.htm

I will admit that I've strapped down an unhappy little one more than once. Toddlers hate to be confined and simply don't understand that they have to be seated sometimes. Firmly anchored in, I could then consol them while we landed.

To get through the airport, they sell all sorts of gizmos like this;
http://www.gogobabyz.com/products/gogo_kids.html
I simply use a small metal luggage cart with an extra bungee cord and it works great. I skip on the stroller and she can even ride in it (and she's 3 1/2). She usually prefers to walk and then I load the carry-ons abord.

Besides, taking your car seat onboard virtually guarentees that it'll be there at your destination. Checking them risks damage and loss. Wont you need it when you get there?

For entertainment, get him a new toy, anything and it doesn't have to be expensive. Keep it and give it to him once you're on the plane. My son at that age liked anything with wheels. Once, I simply had a package of plastic animals. Kept him busy for ages!

I actually don't recommend a portable DVD player *unless* he can watch it without sound. I doubt he'll wear the headphones but try it at home. It's such a short flight, I'm sure he'll be fine without.

I found that stickers, coloring stuff and books were better at occupying them at this age. No one will mind if you read to him.

Just some other small tips;
-Bring a change of clothes
-Bring way more diapers than you think you'll need
-Learn to change him standing up (don't try to fit him on those tiny babychangers and toddlers hate to lie down in strange places)
-Bring an empty sippy cup to fill during the services. This will prevent spills in the air.
-Get up and move around with him but keep an eye out. Those carts the F/A's use are the perfect height for hiding little ones
-Bring snacks. Don't fret security. I've never had anything taken away (yes, water but not snacks) and that's the only risk. If you have something not allowed, they simply remove the item. No scenes, no speeches, no arrests!
-Try to sit in a bulkhead seat so that there's no one in front of you
-Bring slippers, especially if you're not in the bulkhead!

Just be grateful that it's short. My son was 20 months old and slept just 20 minutes of an 11 1/2 hour flight. It was just so fun for him! Not so fun for mom but I survived... Even the calmest, most placid children are not good on planes at this age. Take heart. You're not alone.

For more information, I wrote an article on this subject. It's based on both my personal and professional experience of flying with kids, mine and other people's! It's totally non-commercial and other parents have contributed;
http://flyingwithchildren.blogspot.com

It'll be fun. Both of you get plenty of sleep the night before and good luck!

Has anyone ever traveled on an airplane with a toddler?

AMBER M

I am going to visit my friend in VA, I live in Ohio, which is 10 hour drive or 1.5 hour flight. I really want to opt for the flight but what do you do with an ancy 19 month old for that long? And what if he cries and people get mad at me?

Answer
19 month old. I would suggest getting him his old chair. You can do alot of things.

1) talk to your Dr. about ears popping on left and landing.
2) snacks and drinks
3) dvd portable player
4) plan around nap time and or bed time

if you can pull that off. have an easy carry on and when its time to fly get there early get the little one to sleep. extra blanket and let him sleep/nap during the take off and most of the flight.

5) special new bag of toys

color books, crayolas, books that have flip opens, and waht ever your child loves!

6) a new baby doll or for boy a new what ever he likes

7) its not a long flight at all. Could be 12 hours or move if you were going to a diff. country. It will be over before you knwo it. Have the child look out the window. When seat belts are off let him stand up and strech his legs.

have fun..its ok if he cries a little. things will be ok. people will understand. just sooth him the best you can. Its a part of traveling.

Answer
Malaysia is a good place for a holiday (living there is another matter). It usually makes the 'Best Destination List' (http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0198352.html). Locals wouldnt believe it but it was rated one of the safest places to visit in the world, along with Thailand and Singapore. Tourism is big business. Year 2007 is Visit Malaysia Year (http://www.tourism.gov.my/). It means more programmes for tourists.

You will probably land in the main airport, near Kuala Lumpur (KL). If your kids dont suffer vertigo, start at the KL tower (Menara KL - http://www.menarakl.com.my/) for lunch. Its a revolving restaurant....At night, you wont get the views. Easier to get in than the Petronas Towers (once tallest building).

KL's Butterfly park - little ones would like that. (http://www.malaysiasite.nl/butterflyeng.htm)

Nearby is the Bird Park - small netted enclosure which can be a bit humid but fun (http://members.tripod.com/~panseakl2002/birdpark.htm)

On the way back, stop at the National Mosque - its tranquil as long as you avoid prayer times and nice architecture. Toddlers LOVE to run the open spaces and keepers are tolerant if you dont go with shorts and sleevless and look like you respect their religion (they ask women to put on a modest robe they provide though)

KLCC menara Suria shopping Mall- where the towers are. This is the center of Western-hearted Malaysia. Dont buy the souvenirs there though they have fantastic shops for that there (unless you can break the bank)

For souvenirs, go Central Market - http://www.centralmarket-kl.com.my/ DO bargain or at least try. With chinese vendors, start with half the price they quote you if you dare, and go up.

These are all within the city. Taxis are ok but ALWAYS insist on the meter. (sometimes they pretend they forgot in order to rip you off) Never ever more than 20Malaysia Ringgit to these places.

The BIG 'secret' just for you (I was invited to go but didnt due to love problems): A day trip to Kuala Gandah Elephant Center where you can bathe and ride those creatures. (http://www.malaysiasite.nl/gandaheng.htm). Best way to get there is to hire a taxi which your hotel could help you with or you can plan with any taxi driver who seemed nice so far. I'd imagine 200 Malaysian Riggit would be good for them but dont go overboard. Please make everything clear before hand as to what is inclusive, return time etc so everybody will be happy at the end of the day.

Next- take the budget airline Air Asia flight to LANGKAWI ( http://www.airasia.com/site/en/home.jsp ) which is in north Malaysian peninsular on the border with Thailand and choc full of groovy things to do. (http://langkawi-info.com/)

I went to the night stalls in Kuah town with my sis- we had a blast eating local food, especially 'Satay' and 'Ice kacang'. But, get you injections first in case you dont have a strong stomach (not that its dirty).

Of all the beaches there, I would go Tanjung Rhu (Casuarina Beach http://langkawi-info.com/attractions/beaches.htm ) Why? First, because when its low tide, you can walk quite some way 'into the sea'. Second: From there ask around for a boat trip "to see/feed the eagles".....'Lang' is the dialect for 'Eagle' and you'll see why its called that. You'll be taken on a private little boat along the river until a spot where the man throws pieces of chicken.....Then the eagles swarm in....fantastic.

Also rent a taxi around the island and make sure you pass and stop at paddy fields......and rubber plantations.....or a road side stall set up by some villagers. We did and tried to buy some fried bananas- we were shocked how many bananas the girl wanted to give us for 10 ringgit....Well, its a village and things are cheaper.

We went to the Crocodile Farm - gobsmacking (http://www.affiliate.viator.com/brochure/product_show.jsp?CODE=3705LGK14&ID=1010&PRODUCTID=1016&AUID=3427)

Also went to this exotic restaurant off shore which you get to by the hotel's boat...Again we made the mistake of going at night so though the breeze was fantastic, we didnt see past the restaurant. Which hotel? Errr, forgot. Berjaya Langkawi Resort maybe http://www.berjayaresorts.com/index.html

After you've had enough/want more of/than Langkawi, fly AirAsia to the destination most people would not recommend you because its so exotic - Kelantan - the only state not governed by the same party as the government. Its run by the Islamic Party but dont buy the mumbo jumbo anti-propaganda especially since you are a family and not looking for illicit things.

Too bad the website is only in Malay http://www.kelantan.gov.my/

Why Kelantan? Because its differnt and out of the tourist-trap loop.See the wet market where women sell http://www.kelantan.gov.my/main.php?page=pusatbelibelah&sub=pasar
Night market - http://www.kelantan.gov.my/main.php?page=pusatbelibelah&sub=pasarmlm
Select to stay with a local family (they dot on foreign families) - http://www.kelantan.gov.my/main.php?page=homestay

Or another easy going beach chill out on the east coast is Cherating http://www.marimari.com/content/malaysia/popular_places/beaches/cherating/cherating.html

Why? Its traditional, east coast....Just the resorts would be family friendly...lots of running in coconut groves...Try Club Med http://www.clubmed.com.au/cherating/family.php

Or Legend Cherating http://www.marimari.com/hotel/malaysia/legend/cherating/index.html or Impian Resort http://www.marimari.com/hotel/malaysia/impiana/cherating/index.html

Have a fab trip!

What are you supposed to do with a 13 month old? Feeding, dicipline, playing, etc. Need help :/?

Lillian an

I mean seriously. I just don't know what to do now that she is getting older. I read the parenting mags and child parenting books, and all my mommy friends think I'm super mom but I just don't feel like it. I'm slowly getting better but I'm still not **there** yet.
1. I've slacked off on her menu (healthy eating) and upped the tv the past month, but I'm working on a new meal plan for the whole family and completely banned the tv except everyonce in a while.
Her sleep patterns have changed.
2. She is constantly tossing and turning all night and not only is she not sleeping well, but I'm not either as we co sleep. I don't know if I should move her to her own bed, a crib or toddler bed or an arms reach co sleeper? We travel quite a lot, and I don't want to have to transition her all the time. I don't know what to do. She has never fallen asleep alone. We've always nursed to sleep and still do. My husband gets mad at me everytime I try to wean.
3. I get really aggrivated when she pinches or bites and sometimes blow up when I don't mean to when it hurts really bad. I don't know if I should calmly tell her no, grab her hand, or what. My husband makes a game out of biting and he says "get a bite" and she'll play bite. We should definitely stop this, right?
4. I'm worried about her socializing with other people. I don't have a vehicle to go anywhere so every other week we're stuck. She has 5 boxes of toys, but a lot of them she has out grown. We buy her new ones every once in a while but I don't know what she should play with? She has dolls, blocks, books, dress up stuff, puzzles, stuffed animals, balls of all textures shapes sizes and colors, play teaset, pretend cooking stuff. She also has a pop up play hut with a tunnel she loves. And a ride on pony.

She's always fed, dry, happy and loved, but I still feel like I'm doing something wrong or not doing something. A lot of it has to do with just not having a vehicle, a kitchen table (my husband finds it pointless. He's a little dumb), and no real socializing... I have mommy friends now, but they're all 400 miles away since we moved.

Please answer as best you can. Thanks.

Answer
I can really relate to you,
i have a 10 month old and read alot i do let him watch seseme street (it's educational) and he loves it
but i also include a number of other activities for him in his day, such as walk to the park, play time, independent time, crib time, snacks and meals, one on one time, animal time, reading time, car time, bath time ect.....
his sleep patterns are changing too. he sleeps less now so i added more activities and keep him up for 3 hours not 2 and let him watch while i cook for us. Set up playstations in every place for the house for him so where i go he goes, and has something to do.
As far as healthy eating i told myself i would only feed him organic foods that did not happen , i too am trying to come up with new meals for the family.
sleep i would allow her to sleep in her own crib with soft music, i find my lil guy sleeps better and its safer for him, but in the day he sleeps with me for naps when i do sleep with him in the day. i give him a warm bath and put the johnsons bedtime lotion on every night with a warm bottle and duvae he sleeps all night, everythime. He also goes out side so the freash air will tire him out.

He is encouraging her to bit you, parenting both ways will make it easier on you guys. He should not teach her to bit or make a game of it, because shes having fun with you and thinks it is a game, so does not understand when you get aggrivated, let him know he cant do that because it makes your job as a mom harder and you have to re-teach her not to do it.

Add walks too the schedual, and i hear that you can put the toodlers in a time out once they hit the age of one. so it is one minute per year. 1 years old one minute on a chair, because they understand by that age some right from wrong and what no means. if you say no more than 3 times she would go in a time out on her bed or your bed for 1 minute apparently it works???? have not tryed it yet because mine is only 10 months.

Look for age apprpreat toys on line ones that will teach her in a variety if ways like music pianos, pretend vacum puzzles crayons ect.........
I hope this helped in some way........
Keep up the good work mom.

dude ranch family vacation with toddler?

liane

hi everybody

does anyone know about a great dude ranch or farm where we can spend our vacation around may june with our 2 year old.

i would like to find something where there are ponyrides and things to do with the 3 of us. i am not interested in something were they have things for only kids so that parents can do something alone, thats not what i am looking for.

anyone knows of any cool ranch in california or arizona or even somewhere else.

thanks
thanks, good to know, do you know anything about farm vacations?

Answer
The problem is dude ranches are not made for kids that small, at least not to do activities with their parents. Dude ranches cover a wide range, from real working ranches to resorts with horses. Still the main purpose is to put people on horses and get them out into the countryside. That isn't something for kids that small. Truth is you are at least 3 to 4 years too early for this kind of adventure with your child. When the time does come, I would recommend your child have riding lessons before showing up at a dude ranch, just to be on the safe side.

Sorry don't know anything about farm vacations.

Traveling with small kids is tough in it really limits your options. I took my kids to places like San Diego for the first 2-4 years. Between the pool, beach, zoo and Sea World, they were pretty happy. Of course then I would take another vacation just for me later.

Traveling to Jamaica..........?

Family of four,.. two adults and two toddlers......what would be a good budget for a two week stay?? Excluding air fare??

Answer
This all depends on what type of accommodation you seek.
Starfish resort is a nice place for families. $2400 could do for your room there. http://www.starfishresort.com

If you are looking for a villa a 2-bedroom one can be from $1,000 to $5,000 per week.

You can even opt to stay at a resort one week or at a villa another week. Probably stay in 2 different sections of the island like Negril and Port Antonio or Treasure Beach.

The cost of tours will vary. If you go on 5 tours during that time it will cost you around $1000 for you and your wife. Some tours may not be appropriate for children and many resorts and villas will have a child care facility.

Luck 2 ya!

Need honest opinions of my baby registries. Would love feedback. :)?

suppastaaa

So I'm trying to be conscientious of everyone and their budgets as I register for our first baby. I am currently listed for 2 (Target and Babies R Us) in hope that it makes for more convenient shopping for everyone involved. I'm having 3 showers (his family, my friends since I don't have family in the states, and work). We make more than his family, or mine and I want everyone to feel comfortable making purchases. I also donât want anyone to feel as if Iâm asking for too much. Itâs a delicate topic. SO⦠Is this a good amount of product or too much? Is it realistic? Too expensive? If you were a guest coming to one of the showers would you feel as if I were being too greedy?

Thanks so much in advance for your feed back!

Editing to add that my parents bought the crib, mattress, dresser and changing table. So that's taken care of. I'd buy it all myself, and don't really care if I have to. I just don't want to limit people. The only thing I might get sooner, rather than waiting is the carseat, since you never really know when you'll need it, and its kind of importaint....
Also failed to mention that I directly report to the owner and CEO of my company and I feel as if they'll get me a larger item for the work shower. So I feel as if I have to have something larger for purchase if that makes sense.
Thanks for your âhelp.â Iâm not really certain what you mean by obsolete as we plan on having more children and will therefore use these items again. Cribs and car seats arenât disposable where I liveâ¦

My registry is a list of items that I would purchase even if no one bought them for me. I donât need gifts. I can buy this all and it wonât affect my finances. People would want to stab me, as people really do want to have a village feel in a new baby. Iâd welcome any gift, and really even a card if that were all they can afford. It is not about the gift, itâs about celebrating my new baby!

Oh, and thanks for adding all this up for me. Now that I see the total, itâs not that much. I have friends that have spent that much on baby furniture alone. But I guess this is like the Olympics and youâre the Russian judge that low balls and nitpicks, and whoâs opinion just gets tossed out in the end. Thereâs always the bitter, jealous, negative-Nelly, and here and now itâs youâ¦

Good Luck.

Answer
okay this might shock you, but your grand total of things that you think you need for this first baby... is over two thousand dollars. i know cuz i added it up on my calcuator that's a lot of stuff and most of it will be obsolete in about a year. you could actually put a down payment on a house with money like that. i am not trying to be rude or mean in any way, but i do think you are going over board here.
here are a couple of my observations about your list... no offense just observations okay..
the breast pump is private should be purchased by baby's mom and dad
there are great stroller car seat combos for less than what you have the car seat listed for.
the spoons can be purchased at the dollar store
the humidifier should be bought by the parents if the child needs it
what did our grand parents do without a color screen baby monitor?
there are awesome pack and plays out there for under a hundred dollars (mine even came with a dual level mattress position and a changing center.)

p.s. before you get angry and think that i'm against the whole idea of these registries, cuz i'm really not, i just think that when a baby comes everyone usually brings really cool stuff to the showers and with you having three, i doubt very much that your little one is going to be missing out on anything.

Gifts for a newborn girl?

deb42278

A friend had a baby girl - a month early - and hasn't registered for anything and isn't well prepared. Does anyone know of any good things to get - lotions, toys, bottles, educational/developmental aids? Any help, greatly appreciated!
The mom had a c-section, any ideas on what she could use? Like a good lotion or cream for the stitches? Thanks!!

Answer
My daughter is now a year old and was born 3 weeks early. What we had to go by was some outfits to fit a baby from 4 to 7 lbs. as the newborn outfits were just to large and we had to search high and low to find preemie diapers.

Here is a list of other items that I received or would of liked to received as gifts.

1. Bumbo Seat - the child can use it once they have neck control. It puts the baby in a safe sitting position. Great for those babies that like to see everything. Also found it handy to take to resturants and put it on the table or bench, it was better than some of the highchairs that resturants offer. Can be found at Babies R Us for about $60 Cdn.

2. Portable Swing - this was great as we did alot of travelling to see family and this folded down nicely so that we could take it along and give our daughter something familiar. It also took up less space in our home as we are restricted for space.

3. Gift Certificate for Wee Piggies & Paws - mother and child life cast. Check out www.weepiggies.com I had this done when my daughter was 4 mths old and it's my favorite "art" piece in the house and it captured how tiny her hand was.

4. Items for when the baby is older. The new mom will receive a ton of stuff for when she is little and I truly appreciated the stuff I received that was for the older child, this included but was not limited to:
Infant toothbrush and infant toothpaste
Plastic bowls, sippy cups, spoons and forks, plastic plates
Step Stool for the child to reach the taps or step up to the toliet
Large bibs
Safety items for the house - outlet covers, cabinet door locks, toliet seat lock etc.
Wooden toy box

5. A really nice outfit or coat for the child in about an 18 mth size

6. A Grobag - this is a outfit that you put your child to sleep in, it helps them regulate their temperature, it has a zipper so for diaper changes at night the parents just unzip, change, zip up. It provides the child with a familiar sleeping "area" they learn when it's put on it's time for bed.

7. Create a scrapbook - leave space for the new parents to put the pictures in, attach sticky notes to each page that contain picture suggestions and ideas about the information they should record. I have done this for a few friends and everyone at the shower just loved the idea.

8.a potty for toliet training, booster seat for when they move from the highchair, toys for 3+mths, a push walker (check out the Fisher-Price Ride and Stride Car)

Other items that you can purchase that I think the new mom would appreciate include:

Bath tub with bath toys, hooded towels, wash cloths, Gerber Baby Wash in Lavender, they have a lotion as well

Diaper Bag filled with diapers of various sizes and makes (ie. Huggies, Pampers, Luvs etc.), wipes, diaper cream - I liked Ihle's Paste or try something more natural, small bottle of Purell Hand Sanitizer, rattle, bottles, if she is breastfeeding then breastmilk storage bags etc.

Get a basket and fill it with things that they will need later on such as: infant Tempra or Tylenol (for when baby get's it's shots), infant sun lotion - I like Coppertone Water Babies Spray, Bug Repellant - "In the Bush" Citronella Body Oil by Butterfly Weed Herbals, this is safe to use on infants and works well, a Braun ThermoScan ear thermometer, infant toothbursh and tooth paste, teething ring, beginner baby food etc.

Get a large bowl and fill it with beginner baby food, large bibs, fork and spoon set, bottles, sippy cups, cups with straws, plastic bowls, plates etc., a book about making your own baby food or preparing meals for toddlers etc. Just think about anything that would be used during feeding time for the child.

A vibrating chair

Baby Einstein toys, books etc.

A good breastfeeding pillow

Gift certificate for a photography session

I also had a c-section and for mom I would suggest the following:

Prepare some meals that she or hubby can pull out of the freezer and heat up

Offer to come over and do the laundry, wash the floors, vaccum etc. as they want her doing as little as possible for the first few days

Bring a basket (matches her room) filled with all the changing necessities - diapers, wipes, wash cloths, receiving blankets, a change of clothes, diaper cream, changing pad etc. and have her leave it in the room she is going to spend the most amount of time in with baby. This way it eliminates her having to go up and down stairs to change the baby. I did this, I just would change my daughter on the floor, it was great and so much easier on me (I tried the up and down the stairs thing).

A gift certificate for mom to go and pamper herself at a spa when she is feeling more up to it. Also include that you will be the babysister.

I hope my list of suggestions has provided you with some ideas. Good Luck.

What are some good travel toys?

Luz

I am going to be taking my baby girl on a very long flight. She will be 13 months old by then. Do you have any recommendation for toys she would like but will not bother and annoy the other travelers? Also toys that are not too messy or small... since she still sticks everything in her mouth! Thank you so much!

Answer
I've taken several loooong flights with my 3 year old, the first one when he was 6 months old!

We take Hot wheels, books with stickers, small board books and I'm not sure what it's called but it's a spinning light that little ones are fascinated with and is quiet! You can probably find it at any store (I've bought one at Walgreen's) but here is what it looks like...

http://gotparty.com/flashing_ball.htm

I also have taken small plastic animals or people, like the Duplo stuff and we play & pretend to have them talk. I always make sure he doesn't see ANY NEW stuff (usually just 1 or 2 items) before we are on the plane, and hold back one thing for the return. It will hold her attention longer!

Don't forget to carry on some small snacks, two change of clothes for her and a clean shirt for you (just in case she spills on you like my son did last trip!) I always made sure I had water for take off & landing so my son would swallow & relieve the pressure in his ears. Also when my son was still in diapers I would put two diapers on him, so when I had to change him I just slipped out the dirty one & the clean one only had to be fastened.

I'm sure she'll do great with you there to entertain, cuddle, care & love her! That's the best way to keep her as happy as possible!

What are some good travel toys? FAST

gracie<3

What are some good travel toys for an airplane with 3 kids. One 3 year old girl, 9 year old boy and 11 year old girl.

oh, and the airplane ride is about 6 hours[two different flights, 1st one 1 hr and the other is 5 hrs and is today

thanks

Answer
Coloring books, they are quiet. Bring books that you can read to them. If you have action figures or plush toys bring those, as they won't irritate the other passagers with repetative noises. Try not to bring hard plasitcs if at all possible, as kids will be kids and will bang on things with them for noise. Most airlines will have movies on, so that can occupy them for at least an hour (hopefully). Just try to pay attention to them and keep them busy. Play "eye spy" or have them draw you pictures of what they are looking forward too. Lots of ideas, just have to use your imagination, and keep theirs working too!

Baby and Travel?

Young

We have a 14 months old baby and would like to travel (domestic) using airplane from Midwest to California. this is gonna be our first travel with baby and have several questions:

-how many airline tickets we should purchase. how's the sitting arrangements if it is 2 tickets (husband , wife)and if it is 3 tickets (husband, wife, baby). is there any special rates?
- should the baby sits in a car seat while on the plane?
- we need to rent a car. should we bring our own car seat?

any additional inputs/tips/hints are appreciated
Thanks!!

Answer
For domestic travel you don't need to purchase a seat for the baby if he is under 2 years old. The baby can sit on your lap. If you do purchase a seat for him you will need the carseat on the plane. Otherwise you can check the carseat, and it won't count against the number of luggages you are allowed. You can also gate check a stroller, and you won't be charged for it...so bring it. You will regret not bringing it. You might want to bring a garbage bag to put the carseat in if you check it, because some airlines don't provide that. Yes, bring your carseat. There should be a changing station in the airplane bathroom...some snacks and toys that he hasn't played with much might be nice.

im traveling to ca from ak with a 2 yr old and 8month old. any helplful advice would be great. dont say not to travel with children. thank you
btw, im flying!

Answer
Check with the airlines. They may not allow ANY open items in light of the latest attempts by terrorists. My step-son and his wife just travelled from Guam to Arkansas with a 7 month old (23 hours on a plane). They said it was very difficult on the plane so I'm not going to give you high hopes. You just need tools to help you survive it with the least amount of destruction and stress as possible. Airplane regulations now tend to keep the child in their own seats any time the fasten seatbelt sign is on which is most of the trip. I recommend a single tactile oriented toy (without sound) and a book like Where's Waldo or Highlights magazine for the picture searches. MOST IMPORTANT! Keep the toy you're taking with you on the plane away from the child until the flight so it's new and interesting and special to him or her. You might consider a portable CD player/ tape player with a read-along story book. And ANY time the fasten seatbelt sign is off, let the child and adult walk around the plane if possible. Don't bring a bag full of toys or food. It never works. Remember how little room you'll have to maneuver in those seats. For take off and landing, bring gum or spill-proof cups with juice (if allowed). Liquids may be off limits now.
