infant travel on flight?

haritha

Hi there,

I am planning a travel with my 10 months kid to USA. It is about 24 hrs journey and I am afraid, i may run into troubles during travel. Also my child have often complaints of cold & fever. Also she has indigestion problem. Now I have some questions for you for help.
1. What all precautions should I take for a safe travel?
2. What is the checklist to consider mandatorily while travelling with infant?
3. Can I carry medicines during my flight?
4. Which airways would be a good choice to travel from India to US?

Please help me. Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer
First and foremost try to fly when your child is not sick with a fever. Even coughs from an infant spread germs that will be circulated throughout the cabin. No matter what advice you get, it's going to be an extremely long journey for the little one because they are not going to be able to stay awake the whole time and you will be calming a screaming baby down at some point. But here are some tips that I frequently give mothers when they are flying with their infants.

1.) Keep the baby awake at all times in the terminal so that you it can sleep for most if not all of the flight.

2.) If you have a stroller that has a car seat attachment, ask the counter agents if you can have a row with an empty seat next to it. If so, bring the car seat on the plane so you can put the baby in his own seat strapped in. This helps out a lot because the baby won't be in your lap for the entire flight! It's best if you book a flight on a Wednesday during a non-peak travel season because the chances of the flight being relatively empty are better! Also try to book yourself on an aisle seat so if you can't get that spare seat next to you empty, at least you'll have an easy way to get to the LAV to change the baby when needed.

3.) You can bring formulas, and other medications on the flight if it's for an infant. Be sure to pack a separate carry on bag with just diapers, food, spare outfits, and some toys.

4.) Unless you're flying first or business class, it doesn't matter which airline you fly. If you're in coach, they all cram as many people as they can in the back of the plane. I would stay away from US Air, Delta, or American. Most of their fleet doesn't have any sort of inflight entertainment systems for you to use while you're not taking care of the baby.

Travel sleeping solution/travel dilemma?

This is a 2 part question.

1. I will be traveling to Florida in February when my son is 8 months old. In general, I have no trouble tossing the baby on the floor to sleep (this is my first) but by then he will be portable and able to move around as he pleases. When I put him down to bed and leave the room, I want to be sure that he's in the same place (and SAFE) when I return. However, I have a problem with the pack and play (too big, too bulky, and really difficult to open and close, in my opinion not to mention a pain in the butt to transport especially now that airlines are charging per checked item!!). Are there any other sleep solutions out there, something that will keep my son contained without him being able to climb out of it but something that is safe and won't collapse or anything else freaky?

2. We are driving to the beach this weekend and my son really dislikes his car seat. I can imagine him screaming for the entire 2 1/2 hr drive. He's 3 months old so I really don't want to give him a dose of Benadryl to help him sleep (I know, it's awful, but I'd probably do it if he were a bit older) but I also don't want to be stopping every 20 minutes to soothe him and I DON'T want to listen to him scream. Any suggestions from moms who've faced this scenario?

Answer
1. = try the peapod travel tent for infants to sleep in, its great. I used it for my daughter.

2. I hope you are kidding. DO NOT GIVE A BABY BENEDRYL because you dont want to hear him cry. That is truely awful. I take my daughter everywhere and we travel alot and I have never thought about that. If she cries, i giver he a bottle, a binky, a toy. Sometimes I pull over if needed. But I dont resort to drugs for MAKING my baby sleep

Traveling with an infant?

brittany

In a few weeks I'll be traveling to the west coast. Not only is this my first plane ride but I will have my toddler wit me as well. Does anyone have any tips or advice they can give me.

Answer
Brittany,

Since you will be traveling with a young child on a longer plane ride it is very important that you be prepared for the unexpected.

Be sure to pack enough extra clothes, diapers, food and drink items for your child.

Keeping your child occupied while at the airport and then on the plane will be your biggest challenge.

I am not sure what time of day you will be traveling but it might be a good idea to travel around your child's nap time. However, it may not matter because all the new sites and people around will keep your child very occupied so it may be hard to get your child to nap.

If you child is walking, I would recommend that while you are waiting at the airport try to walk your child around a little bit and point out some interesting sites. You will want to try to keep them occupied while at the same time tire them out. This way once things settle down on the airport you child may be so pooped out that they will fall asleep.

I would recommend bringing toys that can entertain your child but at the same time not disturb the other passengers as much.

Also you may want to plan ahead and see if you can reserve a seat toward the back of the plane. This way you will be near the bathroom in case it is needed and also will have a little more room if you need to get up and rock your child.

A window seat may also work to help occupy your child if you are traveling during the day as during take off and landing they will have something to look at through the window.

I am not sure if you child watches any TV yet, I know it is hard at that age as kids do not have a long attention span. But you could also try bringing along a DVD player to watch some movies. Or if you have a smartphone, there are plenty of You Tube videos on there with short cartoon clips to keep your child somewhat occupied.

How these tips help and good luck!

Traveling with Infant?

Mommy To 3

I am flying friday for the first time for both me and my infant son who is 6 months any suggestions or Advice welcome. Thanks everyone.

Answer
Either nurse or give him a bottle for take off and landing. It will stop his ears from popping. If he gets fussy, get up and walk him up & down the aisle. People will be a lot less annoyed by you walking up and down and letting them see a beautiful baby than by a child screaming. Have lots of soft QUIET toys. They get bored with the same one eventually, so have a few they can switch around. Unless he stinks, try to avoid changing a diaper on the plane. There is really no place to do it, and holding him in your lap while you sit on the toilet in the tiny stall is just not fun.

My oldest was 4 months old the first time he flew, and it was a great trip. Good luck.

What can cause abnormally fast strength and skill development in infants?

K

My 10 week old infant has been gaining certain abilities at a very fast rate. He started trying to lift his head the day after he was born. At 3 weeks old he had full control of his head and learned how to roll over from his tummy to his back. At 7.5 weeks he started trying to roll from his back to his stomach. At 8 weeks he started trying to crawl. He can't get his knees under him but he manages to travel across the designated play spot at a very slow pace. He hates tummy time and fights to get out of the position which results in the rolling over and crawling. I try to encourage play with toys because tummy time is good for him but he just screams so he has gotten limited practice. At 10 weeks he can almost sit, has full control of his back, can roll from tummy to back, can almost roll from back to tummy, and is in the process of gaining skills to crawl. He also has a very strong grip and very strong legs. When we are holding him he tries to stand on our laps. If he is laying down and holding our hands, if we try to pull our hands away, instead of him letting go he holds on and his whole body comes up with us.
What causes this abnormal amount of strength and skill development?
How can I get him to have more tummy time without screaming his head off?
Is this considered a birth defect?
This is not me thinking my child is special or trying to brag. Some of the stuff he's doing typically doesn't occur till 5 months or later. I'm asking what can cause this and if it's reason for concern.
Then why did the doctor say he's very strong for his age? He also said it was abnormal for him to have full control of his head. I've also had other parents saying it's weird and how their kids couldn't do this. He can crawl it's just very slow and not up on hands and knees. I read that kids don't roll from tummy to back till 5 months and back to stomach even later and he did it at 3 weeks and gets 3/4 over from back to tummy. So I wanted to know if he can hurt himself or if there is something wrong.

Answer
Your baby is on a normal development track. Being "almost" able to do something is not the same as doing it. He does not have full control of his back if he can not sit unsupported. Babies try to make the motions of crawling often for months before actually being able to do so. Rolling over can easily occur early depending on the muscles he is using to accomplish the task. I am not trying to minimize your son's performance, but from a developmental standpoint he is not so advanced that you have need to worry about something being wrong. Just let him develop at his own pace.
