What dogs make the best (air) travel companions?

Q. I'm trying to compile a list of small dogs that can easily fit under the seat when flying. Preferably this dog would have few health issues as well, so it is safer in the air. As much as I love them, I know that frequently traveling with a pug or bulldog would pose a challenge to their health no matter their size.

I'm looking at Yorkies, Toy American Eskimos, and the Cairn Terrier primarily. I'd like a dog that is more "durable" and wouldn't stress out too easily. I think the Papillon is adorable, but it seems much too delicate.
I should probably clarify that I'm not planning on adopting anytime soon, and I know I won't be able to bring a dog everywhere I go. However, it would be nice to be able to bring my dog when I fly to visit my parents, and other short domestic trips.
I just really like to think ahead.

you are going to be looking for a dog under ten pounds to travel in the cabin of a plane ... i think the toy american eskimo and cairn terrier would be too large as adults to fly in cabin ... a papillon would most likely fit under the seat in front of you on the plane ... and to be honest, it is not a breed thing that can make a dog more "durable" or less easily stressed ... it is all how you train and socialize your dog ... i have flown a few times with my little guy and he is only five pounds and he is super relaxed traveling but that is because i trained and socialized him well from the day i got him ... twice now the airport staff have made me take finnigan out of his carrier to walk around so they could see he was not sedated ... and i told them, he was not sedated, just easy-going and mellow about traveling ... and there are lots of dogs that can travel the same way ... but regardless of the breed you choose, you will have to train and socialize the dog, not treat it like a baby, and then pretty much any dog can travel in the cabin (if under ten pounds :O) ... and do know if your pup grows to even a size that makes the carrier snug, the dog will not be traveling in cabin ...

Air Travel With Baby Coming Up...Advice Needed?

Q. In July my son will be 9 monthes old and for my mom's birthday we're flying to Pennsylvania to tour Philly for a few days....I myself have ever flown on a plane before but I'm more concerned about traveling with Max.Is there any advice you can give about air travel with an infant?I hear nothing but that it's a pain in the butt.
A few things I'm concerned about are:
Is a diaper bag considered carry on?I don't use a purse,everything's in the handy dandy diaper bag we need.
It will be a few hour flight-we're flying from Portland,OR to Philadelphia,PA,what should I bring for him to keep him busy?
What do I do about his ears popping?
Does an infant require his own ticket to board?Sounds silly and it's not an issue of money I'm just wondering.
Anything else that may be helpful?I'm amking a little booklet of tips and and such helpful things,for when the time comes.

Hello. Here are a few thoughts re your concerns:
It doesn't have to be a pain in the butt. It largely depends on how you can flex his feed/sleep timings around the flight. I used to try and keep my little one awake until the flight, then she'd take a bottle of milk, fall asleep, then wake for lunch which all in all takes up a fair bit of time already.
- Bags. A change bag is fine to take on, within the normal limits of the airlines policy. Some will allow extra baggage for an infant (under 2) but many expect you to have one bag between you.
- Keeping him busy - take a few toys that you know he enjoys playing with - ones that don't make noise! Of course things that pack easily.
- You can get your baby to take a milk bottle during landing and take off (or a pacifier), but with luck he may even sleep through take off.
- He will need to a ticket - but under 2s can travel on your lap - so you'll need to pay an infant fee but not pay for an extra seat. Some people prefer to take pay for an extra seat and take a car seat on board, but you would still need to have him on your lap for take off and landing.
Take as much milk and babyfood as you need for the flight plus a little extra in case of delays. Take snacks that he'll enjoy. Take enough nappies, etc. Wipes are a must, and an extra change of clothes for him and if you have room a spare top for you - just in case!

Air travel with a 7 month old baby girl...?

Ok so I have a long flight... It's like 5 hours to Bangkok then 2 hours stay and then another 2 hours flight to Singapore... I am traveling with a baby for the first time so can u suggest any tips and tricks??? I am intending on taking just a baby bag with me cz I don't want to hand carry alot of stuff especially with a baby in one arm... I am taking the stroller with me. And my baby girl has just started on semi solids like a month ago... So any thing I can give her to keep her calm and entertained? As i said ... Any tips and tricks u can give:) any kind of help will be much appriciated:) thanks...

Here a few quick tips for you.

Firstly, make sure you book a bassinet for your baby to sleep in. Take a change of t-shirt for you, just in case. Take a few soft baby toys and fabric books, linkies and the such like. Food wise, if you can take purees in pouches, they're probably easiest to carry. But check with your airline and airport as to what you are allowed. In the UK, parents have to taste their baby food in front of security staff! (see source for more on security).

Take enough food and milk for all your flights plus a little for delays.

Take a baby carrier if you can as you don't generally get the stroller back until baggage claim. It'll make the walk down the plane steps and through the airport much easier.

Hello my 11 month old daughter and I will be flying from Chicago to Seattle in about a week. It's a 3.5-4 hour trip depending on headwinds. I'm wondering what it was like for you to travel with your baby at this age? What did you do to keep your baby busy? Any tips or pointers? What should I pack in the carry-on? I worry about the pressure change and her ears though she's never had an ear infection or any ear issues... Any suggestions to help her get through the change w/minimal discomfort/crying? Many thanks for your suggestions!

I flew recently too and it was a breeze.
If you are breast feeding-take off and landing is a great time for this.Or offer a sippy or binky.
I did give my little one a little tylenol before we left.The pressure did not seem to bother her at all.
Bring lots of toys and snacks.She will enjoy looking out the window or reading some books as well.
Our flight was almost 5 hours and I was so nervous not knowing how she would take it all in.But all was well for us and I believe it will be for you too.We also got seated all the way in the back of the plane so that way she kind of had an area all to herself since she really did not want to be in my lap that whole time.Have fun!

Will the world likely be the same in 100 years in terms of technology and day to day life?

I don't see anything we can invent any further except some more space travel, not enough to be taking summer vacations to Mars. Only real change in day to day life and technology I can see is better treatment for diseases like Cancer and AIDS and maybe faster air travel.
What do others think, what will the world be like 100 years from now in terms of day to day life and technology?

5 years ago, tablets didn't exist. They've grown so fast they've put a sizable dent in PC sales. I predict before the end of the decade, tablets will have taken over the traditional PC desktop and laptop in the home setting.

10 years ago, smart phones didn't exist, and even simple flip phones were still pretty expensive. Now there are more cellphones in use in the US than there are people in the US. Cellphone penetration emerging markets like India is approaching 100% - and when you consider many of these are also smart phones, that also means internet access is growing by leaps and bounds as well.

20 years ago, the world wide web was pretty much a toy used by college students. The sum total of information represented on webpages was measured in gigabytes. Now we have millions of web pages being created each year. In fact, it's estimated the sum total of human knowledge represented on the internet has doubled every few years since the world wide web went, well, world wide.

This is just 3 examples from within the same industry.

20 years really isn't that long.

100 years from now:
* Computer controlled, driverless cars will be the norm.
* We'll have a permanent colony on the Moon.
* We'll be mining asteroids.
* We'll be using nanomachines to fight illness and repair damage in our bodies.
* We'll be able to grow new body parts from the donor's own cells - no more rejection.
* Air travel now utilizes low-Earth orbit rockets. This means you could reach anywhere on the planet within a few hours.
* Space elevator? This is a biggie. If we could build one of these, the cost of going into space will quickly approach $0. Getting stuff to and from orbit will become trivial.
* Just as the 20th century saw Polio and Smallpox virtually eradicated, the 21st century saw AIDS, cancer, and diabetes eradicated.
* Table computing? How quaint. We'll have computer screens implanted in our retinas and massively networked computers that are "grown" inside our brains and controlled by our thoughts.
* We'll be living longer and we'll be a lot more active. 90 will be the new 60. So many people who are just babies now, will still be alive 100 years later.

Make sure your baby bag has bottles with babies formula. Make sure you have cold packs to put with bottles so they stay cold. Take the bottles out to get warm at least 20 mins or more before feeding. Make sure you have diapers and wipes, rash ointment and all the baby things you will need. Maybe a toy or two. I took my baby about that age in a back pack baby carrier. You put it over your shoulders and it carries baby for you. I had mine on the front. Then baby can sit in that throughout the flight and sleep in it too.
