What are some good quiet car toys for long trips with toddlers?

I have ADD so loud toys in the back seat can be a bit distracting while driving. I thought about coloring books and crayons but if they are dropped she can't reach them because of the safety harness and they can melt when left in a hot car. I am going to get some board books but would like other suggestions.
I'm looking for a bit of a low tech solution.
I'm fine with music, it usually helps me focus really.

Yeah, crayons are a pain in the butt in the car! My car seat is covered with melted crayon, and it doesn't come out easily!

Have you considered DVD players? They're not so noisy that you can't deal with it. And they'll keep the kids seriously busy and quiet. You could even try to get them to wear earphones so that you don't have to hear it at all. But when we travel, we use a laptop to play movies, and connect it to the car's audio system to get great sound.

How long is the trip? If it's more than a couple of hours, plan on frequent stops and carry a good variety of snacks. You'd be surprised how long a bag of fruit snacks or animal crackers will keep a child quiet, especially if it's a favored snack or one she hasn't ever seen but likes.

My son will be 12 months old by the time I take him home to Georgia to see my parents. Will the airline allow stroller on the plane? Do we have to bring our own baby seat? How do I keep my baby quiet on a 6 hours flight?!?!?

1. Roll the stroller right up to the gate. Someone will put it on the plane for you and it will be waiting once you get off the plane. BUT if you ahev one of those huge baby strollers, it may not fit through their little screaning conveyor. If you can't scan it through that, they will not let you bring it to your gate and it will be a diseaster. So make sure you don't rbign the super duper huge mom at the mall stroller. The next size down will fit
2. If you have a car seat, you will have to pay for his ticket for an additional seat. I have always held my son on my lap and the staff is nice enough to give you some room.
3. Ways that have worked for me to keep our son quiet:
a. manupulate his sleep time as much as possible so he can sleep once on the plane.
b. Bring whatever finger food, toys, favorite juice you can tokeep his interest. With our son, crying is easily stopped when we give him sugary alternative to milk like applejuice or pedialyte.
c. Giving him things he has alwyas wanted but was never allowed to have like cell phones or things w/ lights, bringing a new toy
MOST IMPORTANTLY, you are a mom traveling with a chld doing the best you can. DO NOT feel quilty if other people may be annoyed because you decided to breathe the same air as them.
There are a lot of people with children in this world and I have found that people are a lot more understanding than you may think. Good luck and have a safe trip

What are some good travel toys?

I am going to be taking my baby girl on a very long flight. She will be 13 months old by then. Do you have any recommendation for toys she would like but will not bother and annoy the other travelers? Also toys that are not too messy or small... since she still sticks everything in her mouth! I've taken several loooong flights with my 3 year old, the first one when he was 6 months old!

We take Hot wheels, books with stickers, small board books and I'm not sure what it's called but it's a spinning light that little ones are fascinated with and is quiet! You can probably find it at any store (I've bought one at Walgreen's) but here is what it looks like...

I also have taken small plastic animals or people, like the Duplo stuff and we play & pretend to have them talk. I always make sure he doesn't see ANY NEW stuff (usually just 1 or 2 items) before we are on the plane, and hold back one thing for the return. It will hold her attention longer!

Don't forget to carry on some small snacks, two change of clothes for her and a clean shirt for you (just in case she spills on you like my son did last trip!) I always made sure I had water for take off & landing so my son would swallow & relieve the pressure in his ears. Also when my son was still in diapers I would put two diapers on him, so when I had to change him I just slipped out the dirty one & the clean one only had to be fastened.

I'm sure she'll do great with you there to entertain, cuddle, care & love her! That's the best way to keep her as happy as possible!

What are some good travel toys for an airplane with 3 kids. One 3 year old girl, 9 year old boy and 11 year old girl.

Coloring books, they are quiet. Bring books that you can read to them. If you have action figures or plush toys bring those, as they won't irritate the other passagers with repetative noises. Try not to bring hard plasitcs if at all possible, as kids will be kids and will bang on things with them for noise. Most airlines will have movies on, so that can occupy them for at least an hour (hopefully). Just try to pay attention to them and keep them busy. Play "eye spy" or have them draw you pictures of what they are looking forward too. Lots of ideas, just have to use your imagination, and keep theirs working too!

My husband and I are going to the east coast of canada from Ontario (where we live) on friday night. This is the first time we've travelled as a family. And i'm scared to death!! My kids are 5 (girl) 3 (girl) 9 months (boy) Any advice whatsoever to help me survive this adventure would be more than appreciated!

Movies!! Find out if they have access to play DVD's on the plane that kept my little sister quiet the whole ride. If not see if a friend has a portable DVD player you can borrow and mail back to them once you arrive home. If not try to get some food in your carry on they like, something to snack on will keep them happy, don't forget drinks. Toys, but not too small because if they drop it then you're on a search trying to find out where the little car rolled to. Not too big either because there won't be a ton of room. Coloring books. Give them inside windows they'll love looking outside even at night it's cool on the plane to look out. If you give your kids gum, give them gum to chew it'll help a lot with popping their ears as you change altitudes.

The baby you're going to want to keep up as much as possible during the day so he'll want to sleep on the plane. He'll probably be awake as your rushing to find you're gate and emptying your pockets and going through metal detectors but try to get him to sleep on the plane and play with the girls. Keep them busy, maybe even a nap if they get tired, most airplanes have pillows and blankets.

you could also email and negotiate prices with b&bs. ive knocked prices down by skipping breakfast, which means they can sleep in : ) its actually reduced the rate by a fair amount.

camping is super cheap, and you can buy kit here or bring your own over. public transport is good into cities, and variable in the countryside. i just stayed at a spectacular place in the countryside; new shower block, beautiful farm, 4 miles from the sea. £5 a night for utter bliss, and i was completely alone : ) the smaller places are cheaper, and quieter. http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/

best of all, and utterly free ~home swopping. you let a family stay in your place, you stay in theirs. my parents did it a few times when we were small as it ment we'd have places ok for kids to stay in, with tons of toys and whatnot. we also had our cats, rabbits etc fed, though the dog went to kennels. we got their car for free, too, and they had ours. there are loads of sites doing it, all over the world.

How to bring a Budgie home from the pet store?

Q. I'm going to get my first Budgie and I'm a bit confused on how to bring it home from the pet store, like do I need to bring a travel cage? or do they give you a little box? And can you please give me tips and ideas on how to tame it? And how to take care of it. Yes, almost all pet shops will put a Parakeet in a small box for you to bring it home in. Make sure your cage is all set up and ready for it with toys, food, water, and newspaper for the bottom of the cage. Put the cage in a quiet place. You do want it somewhere that it can interact with you. Do make sure you get the wings clipped as it is much easier to finger tame a bird that cannot fly away when you try to reach for it. Don't try to pick it up for a few days, let it get used to its surroundings and it's new family first. Sit calmly by the cage and just talk to it at first. When you notice it is being calm with you, try putting your hand into the cage with a millet spray. You can also leave the door open when you are sitting next to the cage and when it comes out try putting your finger below its breast and a little above its feet and sort of push your finger gently against it saying, "step-up". It may or may not do it right away, but keep trying. Also, birds use their beaks like we use our hands, so it may reach out with its beak to steady itself when stepping up onto your hand. Don't yank your hand away. You may get bitten a few times, but it doesn't really hurt that bad.

The best thing to do and remember is to stay calm and quiet. Try not to scare it. Remember that it is new, a baby and very small compared to us.
