I will be in Chiang Mai for 1 month and a bit of travel after that. My son will be 15 months then.

Don't sell him, no matter how great the offer (or the temptation).
Seriously, LOTS of sunscreen on the little guy, and don't try to do too much in a day. Try to keep him on as normal a sleep schedule as you can, considering the time change. He'll probably be really cranky for a few days until he gets used to it. Also, talk to your doc about any vaccinations he might advise before you go, and about any other concerns you may have related to his overall health and bodily comfort (flying is often hard on little ears, not to mention that a flight of that length is BORING...I honestly don't know how you're going to get through that part of it without him driving other passengers bonkers). Nutrition may be an issue worth discussing, too, as well as what to do if he gets sick.

Are travel clinics nessarry?

I am gong with my 2 and half year old son to Beijing China. Is it really necessary to go to a travel clinic for vaccinations or expensive advice?
Are there any recommended shots. I have been to Beijing before but never with a toddler.
Answer
Vacinations are not necessary for a visit to Beijing. I moved there when my children were four and five and we had no problems. Granted, I had known we were moving there and had them vaccinated against hepatitis when they were younger, but I wouldn't have done so for just a visit.
The most common problem with children in China is their eating with dirty hands. Bring along some hand sanitizer so that you can wash hands when water isn't available.
My kids have been pretty healthy the entire time we've been in China. Occasional colds, occasional tummy upsets. Nothing more than what they would get in the US.
Jet lag is quite horrible with young children, though! When you combine fatigue with excitement, unusual foods, etc., you should probably expect a cold or stomach upset within the first week of landing. After that, however, your child should be fine.
Enjoy your trip.
