Im going from Chicago,IL to San Diego,CA with my 3 year old, flying Southwest airlines said its a 4+ hour flight, any tips, snack ideas, activity ideas, carseat or no carseat (shes 34 lbs). Her first flight, only my 2nd and my first was a 2 hour flight almost 10 years ago. Any advice from check-in to landing appreciated

Answer
That is a domestic flight so that is good. I've never used the car seat, I just let her sit on the seat itself (once she was old enough), but if you can carry the car seat (the airlines says it's okay) then try it. Most people opt not to because when you're traveling with a toddler, it is better to carry less load in your hands.

My tips:
A stroller is helpful. They take it right as you board (depending on the type of stroller) and give it back as you disembark. If they don't bring it then, ask for it. Sometimes they take it down to luggage and it is no fun carrying a toddler all the way to baggage claims.

Some toddlers usually sleep depending on what time the flight is. The engine puts them right to sleep. I usually don't let my toddler nap that day or take a night flight so she'll sleep. That is a huge time passer. Colouring books and story books are another. If you have an iPad or tablet, that keeps them busy too. (Be sure to bring headphones so not to disturb other passengers.)

Some airlines don't serve food and when they do, I find my toddler doesn't eat it. Snacks are a must. Airlines have rules regarding liquids. Best not to carry any at all. So you'll have to ask for drinks on board. No messy food. Those seats are cramped and cleaning isn't fun. Nice easy, finger foods. Dry snacks work best.

Carry as little load in your hands as possible. Only the necessities. Check everything else below. When going through airport security and having to remove everything (shoes, jackets, belts) and keep an eye on a 3yr old isn't easy. Less for you to worry about.

Hope that helps and wishing you a safe flight.

Play travel agent - affordable family vacation spots near Philadelphia?

I'm looking for a decent family vacation spot for two families (4 adults, 3 kids under 3) within about 3 hours of Philadelphia. Any time from late May to August. Budget is about $1000 for lodging/accommodations, and another $1000 for food and entertainment (nothing extravagant). Last year we rented a condo in Myrtle Beach with our friends and it worked out great...but the 15 hour drive with 3 toddlers was...challenging.
A beach or mountain locale would be nice, not necessary. Being able to lodge in the same place, with a kitchen is a necessity (to keep food costs moderate). Something with a pool would be good too. We've looked at the shore spots advertised, and the Pocono resorts, but even in the off-season their prices are fairly insane for a one week vacation.
This year we want something closer so as not to waste vacation days with travel, control gas costs, and keep the kids happy. The budget is not set in stone, I'm just using last year's cost as a benchmark. Any ideas?

Answer
A lot of depends on what type of vacation you guys like. I'd go to one of the smaller towns, like Gordonville. They have a good selection of your standard hotels from Motel 6 to HI Express. But for the cost of a HI Express you can stay at a really nice bed and breakfast. Check out http://www.ebyfarm.com/.

Go to www.family.com and search on lancaster, pa. There's petting zoos and farm tours and all kinds of things that adults could take or leave but little kids love.

Buggy rides, hands on children's museum, pretzel bakery, amish village, train ride, dutch village amusement park, putt-putt golf and a maze. There's even a 3-day itinery in the left panel.
